Thug Life Volume 1 today. Classic album featuring 2Pac with some of my fave hip hop bangers of all time, production is on point, some decent skills, just mega.

I remember when I 'properly' discovered the Beatles. I really envy you. You realise that their best songs are the ones you've never heard before.

Discovering the Stones can be equally brilliant. They are not so consistent, but when they are on form few can touch them. You cannot go wrong with Aftermath, Let it Bleed and Exile on Main Street as starting points.
Thanks for the pointers. I'm pretty in awe of the amount of material here from the Beatles, even moreso when I realised how short a timescale they recorded it all in.

As far as the Stones go, I've heard their greatest hits CD but that's all. I can't believe I've never bought any of their proper albums before.

Totally agree with you on that, The Beatles are a phenomenal band. When I first started getting into them I'd keep hearing songs that I'd heard before but didn't realise were Beatles songs when I first heard them It's true about their best songs being the ones you've never heard before too. Their album "Number Ones" is missing a ton of brilliant stuff because they weren't released as singles.

Discovering The Beatles lead me on to discovering other 60's bands (The Kinks, The Who, Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd, The Animals, The Stones, and on and on) until it became my favourite era of music. A big chunk of the modern bands I like are very 60's influenced too (like all the best bands ).

And, Pour Out a Little Liquor - the tune that makes that album for me.

                Its his best.

Most of the Stone's albums are a bit of a mixed bag. Too much filler and no killer as they say. There early stuff is the best, so you'll probably be sorted if you just pick up a copy of that 3 disc London Collection, as well as a copy of 40 Licks for good measure.

There's always killer tracks on every Stones LP, but as you say there is sometimes too much filler. I love the early London records stuff, but the three albums that I mentioned are absolutely incredible. How anyone could claim there is any filler on Let It Bleed is beyond me. Plus if you only get Forty Licks, you'll miss out on a plethora of amazing Stones songs like Rocks Off, Straycat Blues, Sweet Virginia, Midnight Rambler and more.

right i nabbed this off the metalhead that lives across the street. 3 times through in full since this morning... it's very good, a little too noodly in places and the songs are a little overlong.

it reminds me of many other acts which isn't a bad thing in itself, seriously though there's a mass of riffage, perhaps even too much?!

*edit: i should add i'll be listening through many many more times, these are first impressions.

I wasn't necessarilly saying don't go for the albums at all. Got a good amount kicking around, including Let it Bleed (which is fantastic), but I usually find myself playing Forty Licks or the London Collection regardless. Partly because some i've got are on vinyl and i'm a bit too lazy to get the old record player going but also because there's just less filler to get through. Especially when in the car and I don't have time to be swapping the cd's about in search of a few good tracks.

But no, I wasn't disputing your choices.
