A quick ebay search for wireless slave brings up loads of cheap HK stuff for under 20 quid.

Bearing in mind the 2 flashguns I have are about 15 years old and fully manual in their operation, is that sort of thing likely to work?

As always, I'm fairly sceptical of HK ebay things but have had some right bargains in the past.

For you it might be worth it as you have a manual flash setup. For me it wouldn't offer the full control of the flash. The Canon unit will behave as if the flash is attached, but the cheap will only triggers the flash.

If you only want a short distance the Canon offshoe cord 2 might do the trick. Sadly the off shoe adaptor III which i had for my film eos didn't work with Eos Digital and EX flash units (well it did sort of, as it only triggered the unit).

Might go for it then as I'd like to be able to trigger the flash when it's between 5-15 meters from the camera. Seems it's this or go for a full on new flash and canon setup for ~ £350, no chance!

Offshoe cord would be no use. Thanks for all the info

Alastair if you haven't noticed yet you just got a double victory on the RLLM photo comp

(Well actually, I got exactly the same score as you for the christmas theme so we both won that one )

          Congrats though, two superb shots.

Pocket Wizard,if you want the best mate. Prepare to pay though.

Plenty of places to rent from if you want to try it out.

Nice shot. The weather looks like it was rough.

Here is an odd shot that I took yesterday. I haven't processed it beyond auto levels and a crop, but seems to have a tilt-shift miniature look about it. Must be the DOF.

I must try the tilt and shift effect one day.

                    Anyway talking of bad weather....

Testing my new EF1.4 extender, making my 70-200mm more like 98-280mm. It was pissing down at the time, I and the camera got quite wet. Not too bothered about wet stuff as the Lens is weather sealed. The body isn't but i kept the switches and buttons free of standing water.

                    Vorticies 4tw!

I like the first one with the vorticies, impressive stuff.

Peanuts. I looked at that shot on your flickr, very nice, very sharp.

It was blowing a gale when I took the gull shot yeah, I was on a concrete jetty/pier thing and just after I took it I turned around to head back to the beach and a wave crashed over the pier and soaked my back, would have been the camera if I'd turned 5 seconds later, lucky escape!

Love the DOF in the bird shot. Lucky with the wave, salt water and cameras don't mix.

The DOF on that shot is a bit of a con tbh as it was shot at f/14. As I was on the pier though and shooting up and the buildings were pretty far away, nothing in the DOF range made it into view. That power station was around 2 miles down the coast for example so it'd be pretty hard to get it in focus!!

My favourite bit is the curl to the wingtip and the angle of the tail, shows how controlled in the air they are. I hate seagulls but love it when they just soar about on the wind seemingly without effort. Saw a few great black backed gulls there too for anyone that like birds. The UK's biggest visiting gull, a true monster.

ginger - what extender are you using the canon one? What aperture do you get with it? [is your 70-200 the F4 or f2.8 one?]

                            Cheers,
                            Neil.

It's the Canon EF1.4 and the cheaper 70-200 (f/4) so minimum aperture is f/5.6. I just upped the iso to 400 and it seemed to work o.k. Considering the weather conditions (dull and rain) i was still getting around 1/320 as a shutter speed.

Still would like some f/2.8 glass. I'm looking at a 300mm prime at the moment, however the price difference between f/2.8 and f/4 is about £1500.

The cheapest i've found the 1.4 extender for at the moment is £201.50 from Calumet (which is where i got it from)
