It's not like I'd be able to leave tomorrow or anything, just a random idea.

Heh, why not get some practice by first going to Longleat?

Interesting and shows the effort involved in bringing high quality optics to the market.
Definitely very interesting, any good lens always feels like it's worth its money as you hold it in your hand but I've always wondered how they produce the glass elements. I certainly didn't expect them to be melting and reforming the glass several times like that.

The reason that I see to have the top end of 12-16mp is either to print larger than A4 or when you deal with cropping images. I have a picture of a boat that has been cropped hugely because it was about a mile out, it fills the screen but there is no way it could be printed at a decent size. If I had more pixels to play with then I'd be able to do more with the image.

That bike shot - did you rig up some sort of tripod? I'm very impressed
The problem with megapixels is that it can lead to a poorer quality camera with this daft race going on in the point and shoots. I'm after a decent point and shoot to keep in my pocket when the SLR is just too big (people really don't like that type of camera at social occasions) and most of them are trying to pack far too many pixels into their sensor leading to much more noise. But the reality is that if they went for a low MP sensor optimised for low noise the camera would fail because people would choose a higher MP camera instead.

I definitely agree with you on the benefits of higher MP for cropping/editing, it's something people often don't think of when criticising higher MP counts as being worthless. Whereas for most of my shots it would be fine to have to four or five megapixels that would only be the case if I could perfectly frame every shot I take which just doesn't happen. I currently shoot at 7.5MP/8MP which is a reasonable size, wouldn't mind a couple more MP if noise performance was the same although I'd probably choose better low noise performance first.

The Canon lens vid is interesting. I think I appreciate my lenses more now after having seen the process.

In regards to MP, it's all to do with the size of the sensor, isn't it? I tell my students this and they often give me a funny look. I tell them that my 30D has 8.2 million pixels on an APS-C and their P&S has the same across a sensor the size of my little finger nail which is why it cannot match my camera for noise at high ISOs.

Of course this is the reason why Canon's 5D and 1Ds pack so much punch due to their massive sensor surface to pixel ratio.

Pete, I've no experience of this but my Dad did go on an organised photography holiday to the Isle of Skye (Scotland for anyone that doesn't know).

He stayed at the accommodation owned by the pro that ran the holidays, went on trips everyday to places the pro could recommend (no wasted time hunting out locations) and at the end of each day the group got together and could either chat about PP tips etc or do a projected display of the days work and discuss stuff about it.

All in all he had a great trip and learnt a lot.

Budget in a decent tele lens if you haven't already got one though Pete, imagine you'd need one for the lions etc.

And that video, christ, no wonder lenses are so damn expensive!!

I've got some shots from the w/e too that I'll post up later this morning.

Right here we go then, I went to the MX track yesterday for my first ever attempt at shooting bikes. My aim was to try and get a nice sense of motion and come away with a few decent shots I was proud of, in the end I took 105 shots a came away with 30 keepers, better than 25% keepers is fine by me

Light was a bit of a problem as I could only get the north side of the track and as the sun comes from the south of the sky it was lighting the wrong side of the riders, found a few spots I could use though.

As usual with my motorsport shots, all are manual focus.

Panning a crosser is pretty hard, they go up and down as well as along!!

              Uncropped,
              1/160
              f/11
              ISO 200

              Head on:

              Uncropped,
              1/160
              f/20
              227 mm
              ISO 200

              Jump shots:

              Uncropped,
              1/200
              f/9
              209 mm
              ISO 100

              Uncropped,
              1/200
              f/11
              218 mm
              ISO 100

              1/200
              f/11
              124 mm
              ISO 100

              And something a little different:

              Uncropped,
              1/80
              f/13
              183 mm
              ISO 100

All clickable (as usual) for bigger flickrness and more shots in the set.

Hope some of you enjoy them.

Nice set, very sharp. (my ratio of keepers yesterday was pretty cack! - that said i was walking the dog whilst attempting to capture swans having a fight!)

                    Alastair,

You should set yourself up as an F1 photo journalist. You have the knack when it comes to moving objects. I would probably kill you in a rage of jealousy first though

Thanks you 3, GT, I like your building shot by the way.

I don't think I'd cope too well with the travelling and mad deadlines tbh. I'm such a laid back person I'd constantly have indigestion or something!

I think it's due to the fact I love motorsport that my pics come out better, I give it a lot of research and understand the subject, that helps a lot.

Can you get to a track at all to have a go? You'd love it. Find out what's within decent travelling distance of you and give it a go one w/e. So long as you've got at least a 200mm lens that is and can get within some sort of decent distance of the trackside. What do they do over there locally? Karting? Mini moto? MotoX? Scooter racing? Anything would do.

I would have to buy a lens first though and I am so busy that I would never find the time. Maybe if I am lucky enough to get tickets for the F1 race at Fuji Speedway, I can give it a try.

As Fuji is now an FIA accredited track I imagine you'd need a 300/400mm at least WITH a 1.4x TC or maybe a 2x to get through/over the catch fencing form the stands.

Smaller more local tracks are where it's at for non pros without 2k+ lenses.

2k? I fancy one of those 500mm beasts from that Canon vid.
