The colours might also be optimised for prints. Of the paper variety.

I don't much like any of those shots but as MartyG says - beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

Oh certainly! For me they didn't feel right (he has others that I much prefer), but I'm sure they're just what he wanted. My point is that I - personally - think that some of the shots I've seen on this thread are just as good or in some cases better than his equivalents (in other cases his are better: the portrait shots for example).

He charges ?100+ for unframed prints. Is that price influenced by his name, like other art forms? Or do you think that's the going price for such shots (assuming there was no name attached)?

?100 for a matted but unframed print isn't unrealistic, people charge an aweful lot more - basically it is set by the market. if he can sell them at that price great!

I am trying to work out my price - depedning on size I am aiming for ?20 for a 12x8 un framed and ?40 framed up to about ?60 for a framed biggie around 10x15 depending on cropping in alu or wood frames with matts. People seem to be up for that kind of price.

I am not sure what his name has to do with it - he aint ansel adams but like I said if he can get it.......

If you want a good web presense you should NO way show print optimised photos. You should do a seperate web sized and sharpened print in sRGB so any person can see it. My aRGB images sharpened for print would look pants on a web site!

Just to add to that as well, I firmly believe that images can look as snazzy as you like but the proof is in the print. Here are some examples of some I have made in my room. ALthough yes the lighting is crap - you may get an idea. The print of the grasses in greece positivly glows on paper - it sort of radiates out with the edges of the grass glowing almost lit from behind (yeah bigging myself up here!) It only works large too. The smaller b&w prints are lush in the flesh, especially the arches and yes I know the roofs are wonky! The street scene prints are some favourites and are lovelly and vintage looking whilst rich in colour. Seeing the prints is far more satisfying. I know that every one of these are saleable because I have had people ask about them but know that as an art form I have masses and masses to learn and progression to make.

Enjoy (as mujch as you can images of prints!)

I quite agree - but a good photographer doesn't necessarily mean someone who understands colour profiles and the like in the digital world. Particularly if he farms it out... who knows though! And that said... you'd think they would. bah. I'm just making excuses for him. He stinks

test - hopefully this will be a bad image from flickr!

whoo hoo! This is the said glowing image in pants sRGB format. The print looks lush compared to this - the colours are the same but my god it looks goo din the flesh, just for thos who care!

                    and some recent ones:

The whites in this are totally un blown - in real image or print the detail in the snow rocks!

and a self indulgent poncy one to end.

                    Sorry for the oldies!

Why do the lights come out as pentagons?

                      Just curious...

It is to do with the aperture. My lense is a cheapo(ish) 24-85 which has a 5 blade aperture. Combined with a slowish aperture of say 5.6 and you get slightly defines lights. I like it for a shot like this where it is deliberate but if you want the smooth as hell background the poncy americans on digital photography web sites call bokeh then lenses with rouder apertures can smotth out these out of focus areas until they are buttery smooth.

Interesting fact for thos who love all things japanese: bokeh comes from an anglacised japanese word I believe for out of focus or similar.

                          What lovely photos bangaio

Out of interest, where do you get those frames? I recently got this printed (though slightly tweaked) and I was quite pleased. Quite fancy getting it framed for my room. It's currently a 12" x 5" print, though I'm tempted to get a bigger one at 20"x8".

edit - and you can't get far on flickr without learning about bokeh

Don't start me on frames!!! I searched for ages to find frames I liked. The wooden oaky ones - IKEA all the way. You can get plain ones and paint them up from there too (my Uncle used to be a photgrapher at the natural history museum and swears by Ikea frames).

The black ones are from a store called Cargo and they come matted and are really well built in alumin ium. Best of all they cost around a tenner including the matt(mount call it what you want!) ?12 for a 40x50cm frame I think. They are really good. I got them Here although the don't deliver frames online - you have to go to a shop.

Interestingly I use plain old epson archival matt paper and although it is matt, it looks amazing behind glass.

Thanks for you comment by the way. Now I can get FLickr pis up I need to start contributing new material here! Love the chairs, the blue really pops out from the picture!

Sadly i'm a bokeh fan through and through. I eventually got the lens of my dreams..the leica 35mm Summicron (4th generation)..often refered to as the 'king of bokeh'

Bokeh isnt important to everyone but out of focus areas are a big part of my photos and so the bokeh has to be pretty good.

Some people make images that are all about the out of focus bokeh. Its not something I have tried as it takes knowing your lens, camera lighting etc inside out...a few years away for me!

Bokeh.... a whole new world of knowledge has opened up before me.

                                Thank you forum.
