Great photos from everybody as usual; I do like seeing airplanes (war related ones especially) so it is nice to see GT taking some good photos of those.

Spagoli, I am not feeling the first two (I'm not a huge fan of Macro) but the third one is absolutely superb - all the edges overlapping one another but just enough to see where they end and begin; very nice indeed.

Garf, a good beginning although I'm not sure about the concrete in the foreground but keep at it mate. I quite like those two giant footprint-like holes in the mud beside the boat - a little someting that catches your eye. Good luck and I hope you enjoy the D40(X?)!

Alastair, great photos as usual especially the three part photo - I love those very much. I'm a bit sad it is your last Hip Hop related photo (for the time being?) but I have enjoyed your work in the last few weeks and I hope you carry on your good form.

I just passed the 100 photo mark a few minutes ago on flickr and feel I have improved a fair bit since creating my account back in April (not long ago I know) but I still have a fair way to go to capture some truly excellent photos.

I am enjoying the D40 (not the X) - seems to be a good little starter camera for me, and it was only 260 odd quid with the Nikon cash back offer, so a bit of a bargain to get me up and running.

Ahh, thanks. It might not be the last shot from the 2 weeks work I post but it is the last work for them for the time being. It was getting on my nerves a bit actually, was quite badly organised and I kept getting bum information. Also they are still to pimp my work in any way at all, not on their site/blog or even a link on the friends page. Too late now really for them to bother as the event is over.

Back to photo class tonight, only managed to take 12 self portraits out of the 36 asked for, oh well!

Pete, how'd all the work go? Are you drowning in processing and conversions like me?

The band was OK, got a few decent shots but only when I got a bid fed up from being polite and practically stuck the lens in their faces. It wasn't for money or anything but I don't mind shooting them as its good practice in poor light.

The wedding went really well and although I wasn't on 'official' duties (though I will be official wedding photographer soon ) I had a good time. I was actually processing and printing photos at the reception as a bit of an experiment, and it went down a storm.

The last bit of work I have started on but have yet to find anything particularly suitable. Had some nice results but nothing worth posting.

I got to use a 5D with a 70-200 2.8 IS lens and 530ex flash over the weekend - holy *?"$! It was like a thing of beauty, even though it weighed a tonne!

Nice one Pete, tell me more about the printing at the reception, just laptop and printer was it? Must have cost a fortune in paper and ink.

At photo class last night we learnt about how ISO, aperture and shutter speed all link together and how to work out how to change one to affect the other and also get the correct light meter reading. I knew the practical side of all that already but didn't know the theory, was good to get it taught properly. We then looked at each others self portraits and chose favourites/discussed them etc.

Homework is a 50 steps project. Start somewhere and take a shot, walk 50 steps and take a shot of something from where you are now standing, repeat 36 times and there you go. Should be fit by the end of that!

That's quite a neat project. Sounds like the course is a lot better than the one I did!

Could I please have your opinions on this shot and it's BW conversion? Trying to show the fact that it's abandoned and decaying.





The BW is worth clicking to see big (if you're a flickr friend).

Not done my 50 steps project yet, a task for the w/e I think.

All I can say is that the B&W does show the sense of isolation, is abandoned and decaying more than the colour photo if that is what you wanted to know.

The sky certainly does help in the B&W photo too as it gives a slight sense of apocalypse and the shadows on building gives off a subtle effect too.

Did you try and take the photograph from a different perspective Alastair?

Thanks for the feedback ET. Perspective, that's an interesting comment. I tried lots of different angles and views as I had a grand plan of going there and getting this great shot of the site as this massive crumbling wreck that loomed over everything around (as it does in real life). It's illegal to enter the site though so I was pretty limited to where I could get away with going without being arrested and every other shot just lacked any sort of perspective or scale, really underwhelming. I'm disappointed. I was also using my 300D for the first time again after using my Dads 30D for the last 3 weeks, god I need to upgrade, the 300D is so **** after using the better one.

Anyone else got any comments on them?

Also, as well as comments on the above, who uses Lightroom? Is it any good? Anything in particular I should know that I may miss? I'm getting it this evening.

I used the beta until it ran out! Then I wasn't bothered for ages as it didn't properly support my R-D1. I was tempted again on the weekend but decided to give CaptureOne a go, which I'm not very keen on so far despite everyone telling me its brilliant!

Re. Your photos...I actually think I prefer the colour version, which is rare for me. I like both the shots but neither really shouts decay (the main building seems very tidy)! Sorry...

Are they shot in that big industrial area that is all abandoned? It looks like a place I went on a stag do (shooting) a couple of years back...
