This shot will probably give you an idea of how muddy it was at WOMAD. This is a section of one of the main pathways that had be turned into a mud bath.

Great shots. Were you up on the stage with them?

Thanks. I was for some, i.e the second one (which I love, cos it looks like he's firing frickin' lasers out of his guitar! ), but most were taken from in front of the stage, quite close to the front of the crowd.

Yeah thats fantastic. I love the first one too - but then I'm a sucker for black background black and white portraits

            Its incredibly noise free too.

I love those shots too - and yeah, I was really pleased with the quality of the photos as well, the new lens makes quite a difference!

I was just out in the garden and saw a really freaky lookin spider - I took some shots and will upload them if they came out ok.

Some more pics of said scary bugger here - not great quality, but you get the idea

And a couple more from me. This guy was playing guitar and singing harmony with someone called Sam Tshabalala. There were four of them and they were all full of personality and just great fun.

This lass was also singing for Sam Tshabalala, she had a great voice and was absolutely gorgeous.

                This is Sam himself.

And this is Taj Mahal playing some blues. Unfortunately its very very noisy but I love the deep red of the backlight.

Those are beautiful Ish - really nice! I especially like the way the girl (who looks a little like Lisa Bonet - mmmmm) isn't actually holding her percussion instrument; it's just floating betwixt her hands!!

                    Superb shots Ish.

Great shots from both Ish and Dan there!

I've been slightly preoccupied , but I've started to poke through my shots from Dour festival from a couple of weeks ago.
Being ruthless, there are only a few that really stand out, but I'll upload them as I process them. They're nowhere near as good as any recent ones in this thread, being mostly from the crowd and with a wee compact camera!

The Fuji f31fd is a really nice, really solid little camera. I had it in my jeans pocket for a lot of the festival, and it miraculously managed to survive totally unscratched. Plus almost 700 photos later, it had only dropped one battery bar. Astounding.

Anyway, here are a couple of pics. Click for bigness.

On the walk to the festival:

Some nutter climbing a pole during Tiefschwarz:

I have some decent music-related ones to come too.

Thanks for the kind comments guys. Lots more to post yet... I'll be processing all week I should think!

Magnakai - I like the lunatic on the pole. Great moment there

Alastair - must admit I don't understand why your teacher is telling you that. Seems very "old school" to me. Like MartyG says the priority modes usually give you the control you need but, I find, let me also quickly take snapshots. I'd lose moments if I was having to always meter manually. I've settled into a default camera setup of Aperture priority with the widest aperture and lowest ISO and spot metering. After every shot (or sequence of shots) I set it back to those settings so I always know where it is. At the festival I was mostly shooting in very low light so I adjusted this to ISO1600 the minute I stepped indoors.

Anyway. My ten pence worth anyway

Dan, great shots, especially the first two.

Magnakai, the dude on the pole is a nice shot.

Ish, love them all. It's almost as if the WB is wrong as it's tricking my eyes that they are lit with stage lights but it's still daylight. Gig shots just always seem to be dark in my eyes.

The teacher is getting across the point that to be creative (the course is called 'Creative Photography' after all) you need to be in control of the camera and understand why it's doing what it's doing. Considering that 10 out of the 12 of us have literally no idea how a camera works I think it's useful for them to get a real understanding of how aperture, shutter speed and ISO all affect each other.

As I said before, I already know what's happening and why so I sometimes use Av instead (which is where I do 90% of my shooting anyway), last night I did however go manual as we were approaching total strangers asking to take their pictures. It makes it more interesting if you have the time too. You should all try it when you have time to compose a shot etc rather than just grab a reactionary shot. I can see it'll be totally pointless for gig/motorsport/football etc but it is the real way to do it.

Hope that doesn't sound like a rant, it's not supposed to be.

BTW, our teacher is a bit arty rather than technical, one of her recent projects was to photograph blind people and their traits (expressions/feeling with their hands instead of looking at things). Obviously though the subjects could never see her work, harsh.

Harsh indeed - but probably very good critics to have

                              Great gig pics.
