Ta, the old bloke was a bit of a drunk. Was a bit nervous about talking to him, he was fine for me to take the picture so long as his face wasn't in it. Would have been nice to have a little fill-in flash. Still a bit late for that now.

Right, I understand.

No, I didn't use rear curtain sync flash. In the pic the die is travelling Left to Right, even though it looks like it is moving the other way. The flash fired, followed by the long exposure (half second).

Rear curtain sync (long exposure and flashes at the end) would have been a better alternative because in my method the die would have had a peroid of exposing the background, after the flash...hard to explain, but it causes ghosting where the background exposes through the object ().

Unfortunately having looked at the custom functions of my camera, I can only do Second Curtain Sync, which flashes at the start and at the end of the exposure. I may use this and try to ensure the first flash misses, makes it even trickier though!

went to my parents to get a few pics of the dogs tonight. Struggled with the light a bit (and getting them to sit still, everytime I lay down to get a snap they kept coming up to the camera and wanted to lick it )

That's cute! Really nice fur. You can almost reach out and fluff it up.

I like all three of those GT. The first one obviously has the most focus, but they all have nice imagery and interesting hard lines.

Pete, that's really cool idea. I've got to have a go at that myself. The timing's gotta be a killer.

Here's another one I got the other day with that 100mm macro. This lens is really versatile.

450D/XSi announced and reviewed already. Main thing seems to be 12.2 Megapixel. No news yet on 5D replacement though

I have a proper post to write up about something else but that'll have to wait.

Read a bit more now, switching to SD cards and different batteries!!

Also has ISO display in viewfinder, spot metering and the big thing for ham fisted Canon owners is that it beeps rather than switching off if you open the mem card door whilst it's writing to the card. They all used to just lose the data, can't say it's ever affected me though as I can see the giant flashing light warning me that it's writing!!

3 posts in a row, get me! First some new shots:

Tarner Park was Brighton's last remaining official graffiti spot where you could just go a spray the walls however you wanted with no fear of reprisal. The council have deemed it a good idea to close it down and clean it up. They obviously don't realise that the writers will just start going illegal again and the city walls will from now on be dogged and tagged like never before, smooth move. My idea of a journalistic/reportage shot on the first day of the clean up.


Also, a welcome return to my ongoing street furniture (literally in this case) series.


Both taken with the new 17-50 f.2.8, really starting to like the lens. Both shots are at 17mm, the first at f4 and the second at f2.8 and are both plenty sharp.


Also, all yesterday afternoon I had the pleasure (I say pleasure but it was freezing cold and pretty wet) of assisting this man (who's gone full time this year) on a location shoot. The location was under Brighton pier! The set-up was 2 Bowens running from a battery, one with a softbox. The model was blonde and the clothing was corsets. Let me say one thing, the world of fashion photography may well be glam, once you get to a location shoot in the winter it damn well isn't. I was well wrapped up and I was shivering at times, the poor model was just in a corset and pants and must have been wrecked by the end. I wouldn't be surprised if she has pneumonia today! Interesting experience though and I hope to be able to help out again soon, preferably either in a studio or on a nice sunny day!

Finally, Mag, I like the idea of that shot but the squirrel gets a little lost (may be my colourblind eyes?).

Argh spot metering!

Teeth = teeth + gnash.

Increased megapixel I couldn't give a toss about, but I've been in a few situations where Live View would be handy.

ISO in viewfinder would be terribly useful, as I sometimes forget I've set it to 800, go outside, and proceed to ruin a couple of good shots. It's not a dealbreaker though, as I normally remember and can change it without looking. Still, spot metering!

Ooh, there's higher AE compensation too! That's handy.

I thought that about spot metering and whilst I have used it since getting the 30d I've not used it loads or as much as I imagined I would. Unless you'd be metering off a grey card/cloth I doubt you really need it tbh.

I still haven't found the use in my photography for live view either.

Sometimes I want to get my camera into weird positions where I can't readily look through the viewfinder. I'm especially prone to it when waving a tripod around. It's a really bad habit.

Live View would be useful with Macro photography I'd imagine, I often 'lose' the subject so being able to pull back would be a bonus. Other than that I don't see enough on the 450 to upgrade from my 350.

Don't get me wrong, I know of lots of reasons for it but I've never found the need for it.

That surprises me though, it's a pretty big step up from a 350 now to the 450. Obviously I'd still recommend a 30D instead and actually get a nice body instead of a plastic fantastic

I am thinking of upgrading the body this year, but having used the 400 a few times I know it doesn't offer a huge amount extra. Having also used the 20d and 5d a few times, I know they (or specially the 40d or 5d) would be a better investment.

For the money though, the 450d looks like an incredible bit of kit. Just not for me
