I've recently heard of a similar thing and it sounds very much like a scam. Some people on a mailing list I'm on had received calls from people (with Indian accents but Western names) saying much the same thing: we've had an alert your computer's running slowly etc.

God knows where they're getting names from. In this case, the people who received calls are listed in a directory of translators, but it's not something that's readily available online. I'll have a quick look back through the posts from the time and see if I can find more info.

From what I can gather, it's a hoax to get you to allow them to remote access your PC, thus gaining access to any files you have and any information you have secured therein.

Cheeky, but it also scares me as I think "What if my wife had answered?"...she's pretty savvy, but you never know.

Once again though, I'd advise anyone who recieves a call they weren't expecting to request a phone number and tell them you will call them back.

Very cheeky. I think there's a lot of folk who would panic if someone called them up claiming to be from their 'Windows XP provider' telling them they've got a serious virus infection.

            Surely that's not real?

If they call me, I'll be asking them to help me. I'll string them along as much as poss saying I've pressed it and sent that and done it

Not a very nice article, but a guy playing Counter Strike in Asia got stabbed in the head after someone accused him of cheating.

Here's the article on Kotaku (contains an image that may put you off dinner)

Just saw a belter of a car accident on the way back from Southampton. Car flipped over and everything. The girl was okay, just a bit of bleeding, and going into shock, but everyone was okay!

                    Amazing really.

When a red card just isn't doing what you want it to do try replacing it with the new red card, riot police & pepper spray combination.
