    Seriously though.

Kudos to whoever sold them that story.

Maybe a stupid question, but what's a Wardrive?

PeteJ: Is there a next frame for that photo? EDIT - Yes there is in the attached story. I've just been to an airshow today coincidentally.

Booth83: Isn't it where you drive around in a car looking for unsecured wi-fi spots and mark a sign in the street for others to use. Obviously people also try to break in to whatever system they can too.

A preposterously overstated term coined by friendless perma-virgins to describe a nerdy activity in an attempt to make it sound edgy in some way. Not a pop at our esteemed colleague Spatial btw, just the nerd culture that spawned it.

My personal favourite is a toss-up between warwalking (come on, really) and warchalking (ffs).

umm, but doesn't it originate from the film War Games, when they dial random phone numbers to get a connection. I don't think people just added 'war' to make it seem butch.

I have wardriving app for my DS. Amaze. Used it once and found loads of connections (secured) even though I can only see 4 houses from mine. Weird stuff. Loads of people are still on WEP which can be cracked in minutes apparently.

The best bit about it was I've seen more l33t hacking skillz in a junior school IT class - the guy was sitting in his car with his mates waving his laptop around as they all crowded around. You could see the packet sniffer software screen on the laptop

Then they actually got out of the car (so managing to peg Wardriving and Warwalking in one go, for double idiot points) and were waving the laptop around in the street like some sort of Holy Relic and being as subtle as a sledge hammer.

It was pretty clear that they were picking up my router's signal (WPA2-PSK encrypted and a stupidly long gibberish password, thank you very much) as I know for a fact that it's the strongest of all the networks in the whole street (seeing as I've been all my neighbours at one point or another to sort out their IT queries).

My window is also open so I hear them going "It's this one here, the signal is really strong..." and pointing at my house. Before then saying something which I didn't quite catch but sounded like "...this is the one to crack..." Again, subtle.

So now, just for ****s and giggles as it's obviously amateur hour, I manually flick off the wireless signal and watch with great amusement as total confusion sets in. They spend the next five minutes waving the laptop around even more and excitedly yammering "It's gone now, it's gone... try and find it again..." before giving up and vanishing.

I think a change of SSID to something particularly abusive is required - or perhaps just "I took your licence plate and rang the police"

In other news, it's taken me a week but the new layout for the BBC News website is the most horrible thing I've seen in ages. It's almost like there's no structure to it - I can't even be bothered to try and read half the stories any more.
