The pool stage at the Rugby World Cup. If you're one of the many teams losing 87-0 or 83-7 or 67-3 or various other pathetic scores, you have absolutely no business at all being in a world cup. There's not enough good rugby sides in the world to sustain this, either they need to half the number of teams and start at the knockouts or just sack the whole thing off.

At the moment we've had a month which has been nothing but a massive waste of everyone's time.

But then rugby is a massive waste of eveyone's time all the time imo.

Shame they were never allowed to release series 2 & 3 on DVD, or even show it on BBC Three anymore .

I'm not much of a rugby person, but the NZ-France game the other day was excellent. Time well spent!

I'm a bit of a new convert to rugby, so my opinion isn't worth anything, but I guess that's just a side effect of there being so few truely professional rugby teams in the world at the moment. For many of these smaller, essentially semi-amateur teams, this 4-yearly event is the only real international exposure they get.

People more informed than I hold the opinion that the world cup should be every 2 years, or at least having more international fixtures that include these weaker teams. Apparently, Italy have improved massively since becoming part of the Six Nations.

The alternative would be making the world cup similar to the world cup of American sports, where you actually only have a small handful of countries. I'd rather the event be truely international.

Yeah, what they need is for these teams to play more games outside the world cup, like have other six nations tournaments where Namibia and Romania or teams can get involved more frequently. More world cups certainly isn't the answer.

I mean, Japan? I bet they've not even played a game since the last world cup

You say that alternative there as if it's a bad thing, as if having Japan lose 100-0 is better than not having Japan. It's a strange view, really. What you need is for Japan to be good enough to warrant a place, not to let them in just because they happen to be in Asia.

Each to their own. I'd rather cut off my pen1s with a rusty breadknife

I'd like to see the minnows get more normal games AND take part in the World Cup. The sport itself is to blame, with little competitive opportunities outside of the tournament for too many teams.

Other sports have shown the benefit. In football now there's few easy games, and many 'smaller' teams over the years have produced decent efforts - Greece, Croatia, South Korea, Czechs, Belgium, Romania.

Cricket also shows that minnows should be embraced. Sri Lanka were terrible for years, real whipping boys, yet they evolved to be a very good, true test nation. Likewise, Bangladesh are making slow strides in the right direction. They are benefiting/have benefited from regular cricket. Ireland have produced some amazing, devastating results against the big boys - in the World Cup! They had next to no proper competitive games before these results.

So yes, having Japan beat 100-0 is better than not having Japan in the WC. As long as it's supplemented with proper competitive matches in between tournaments.

Japan should be involved if they're good enough to be involved. I absolutely want them to be in the World Cup, but I want them to be there because they deserve a place, not just because they needed some extra teams to make up the numbers.

They need to be looking at the international calendar between world cups to stop this happening and to get these teams competitive, or at least within 20 or 30 points.

Same argument in cricket with Canada, Netherlands, Ireland and Kenya. They got kicked out of the next WC, but the ICC have had to rethink since it was pointed out that Ireland were part of some of the best games of the last two tournaments.

It's a crying shame that these teams aren't given a proper chance to develop. That's the real irk for me.

                            Can't disagree with that.

No, that's football At least rugby players arent paid insane unsustainable amounts of money, despite arguably having a tougher job than footballers.

I've seen England beat Romania 125 to 7 (or there abouts) in the past!
