Exactly. Trying to pave his way back, and stave off the possibility that he might yet be barred. The news should read: "Lawyer hired by Johnson to investigate enquiry into Johnson misconduct sides with Johnson."

I thought Johnson didn't like to meddle with enquiries that were ongoing?

Anyway, this is not a government-appointed lawyer. This is Johnson using the last dreadful gasp of his influence to use government/public funds to his own ends.

£1000 rent hike reads the bbc headline. 3% increase. So, either these tenants are already paying £33,000 a month, or the bbc listed the annual increase. Who on earth lists rent prices in annual terms unless you’re going for an outrage click bait?

Don’t get me wrong, Tory scum etc. but the headline makes it sound like a £1000 a month rent increase, which this clearly is not.

That's true. It never clicked with me.

Is a 3% yearly increase unreasonable in the current climate?
Maybe would have been better handled - a bit of tact at least.

They clearly are not short of a penny. This is merely greed

According to The Sunday Times Rich List in 2019, Benyon is worth £130 million. He controls the Englefield Estate, a 14,000 acre estate of mainly rural land and property in West Berkshire and Hampshire between Reading, Newbury and Basingstoke. It is the largest private landowner in West Berkshire

Yep, it depends on the previous rate. Ours just rose by around 7% which sounds much steeper but being fair we're actually still paying well below the local average and it's not that major a leap all in all.

Truss to push ahead with low-tax economy despite calls for caution | Liz Truss | The Guardian
Despite other Tory's raiding the red warning flags Truss plans to plough on with tax cuts because she isn't a big fan of wealth redistribution and supports the fact that tax cuts will overly benefit the rich whilst leaving the poorer families dying in their homes this winter.

I went up the lift in the shard a few weeks ago. £32 IIRC and £16.50 for a glass of champagne on arrival. No wonder he climbed up!

She's trying to look like Thatcher, with her "there's no such thing as society" schtick, in saying "there's too much wealth distribution going on".

Truss and hardcore Tories have always believed the same thing; that it isn't the government's job to "look after" the people. That's the job of the people themselves; and is that so bad? Or is that the words of the finest minds of the 18th century?

The world we live in can't function like that. With the reduced regulations to capitalism and the globalised economy, the populace are subject to the whims of too many forces that are too big to do anything about. What was the man-in-the-street meant to do about the ongoing utilities crisis?

UUrrggh ummm something about Blitz Spirit <blusters> forgive-me forgive-me </boris>

I think there have been some choice words removed from this story

Honestly, these stories always seem like easy puff pieces but they really need to dial up the jail time for doing stuff like this as a deterrent. 5 years minimum, extra for the peeping tom moments

Speculation that Liz Truss' first act as PM will be to set the tone of the new era by U-Turning and adopting a Labour policy... wait... did I say new?

Energy pricing may be frozen for two years if it follows a proposal Scottish Power submitted that is backed by other providers.

It doesn't need freezing, it needs reducing. Don't freeze it for 2 years at lethal levels.

That's the Con(servative) we've been waiting for. 2yrs of saying they saved the public from rising bills whilst securing 2yrs of record level profits for energy firms.

The GE can't come soon enough.

What’s everyone going to do at this stage? Mp’s have written out every law that can hold then accountable for anything serious whatsoever. They do what they please without consequence.

Truss it is then. As we step further down the slope of candidates completely unsuitable for the job.
