It hasn't really had any national coverage (probably because it isn't happening in London), but Arriva Yorkshire buses have been on strike for... 22 days now with no end in sight. They did really well out of privatization and control large parts of West Yorkshire and much of East/North/South too. I think in all areas of West Yorkshire they're the dominant company and in maybe 80% of cases they're the only company. Any time I've walked past the Wakefield bus station it has been completely deserted with every single signboard reading "CANCELLED".

My area is a bit of a scattered conurbation and a lot of my colleagues who rely on public transport have been completely stuck for over 3 weeks now (getting a taxi from some of the outer reaches would be at least £50 each way). A few are in a lucky position that they can make a longer route via the rail system (when that isn't on strike itself), plus a handful of bus routes are still served by the few independents still in business - though we're talking about a handful of buses running a limited service. Probably less than 5% of what's normally available, certainly in my city anyway. It's causing enormous inconvenience.

The strike is over pay. And you know what? I fully support it, because the wages they're being offered are absolutely comical. For your first year as a driver, you're on £9.79 an hour - that's a Freddo bar an hour above minimum wage. But if you stick it out for three years, you'll get onto their top tier of a whopping £12.15! Might as well just push a broom round a yard, it's less bother. The company isn't making a loss, they can afford to pay a decent amount, it just seems like it's an operational decision - they'd rather have a low-wage, high-turnover staffing pool (and the awful service this will inevitably cause) than staff who are happy doing their jobs because they know they can pay their rent. Because for most bus customers, it's Hobson's choice - you can get the lousy bus service from the one company operating it or you can hit the bricks.

Isn't there some theory about how Arriva are a big German bus company, and their UK operation is expensive to subsidise cheaper fares in Germany? I'm sure I read that somewhere.

Sounds about right the uk gov letting that happen. Like the qe2 bridge, so much income tossed down the drain daily that could go back into our system and not a private french company.

If that wage rate of £9.79/hr is correct it is absolutely appalling.

In my part of NW London the typical start wage is around £12.00/hr and tops out about £16.00/hr depending on the company. This seems typical across London.

At that lowest rate for a 5 days (8hrs/day) week that's around £25,000/year widely regarded as the average wage a single person needs to live in London. At the highest rate its just over £33,000/year, just about a livable amount to service a small family unit.

£9.79/hr is a bloody (bad) joke anywhere in the UK for anyone and it stinks of those companies using the 18 - 20 year old's minimum lawful wage £6.93/hr to attract school leavers etc and then screwing them something rotten. Its no wonder that when they get into their 20s and they're entitled to a minimum of £9.18/hr - £9.50/hr they're unhappy as experienced drivers being paid just £9.79/hr, about £20,000/year, 30p/hr more than the minimum wage. Scandalous.

The question I'd ask is why is there an age tiered minimum wage system at all? Once you're trained if you're doing the same work why on earth isn't the minimum wage universal irrespective of age?

Year thats a crap hourly rate especially for someone expected to take on the responsibility of driving a bus.

The CMA review has found that profiteering at petrol stations hasn't caused pump price rises but an extra eye will be going on why prices haven't fallen in line with wholesale drops

Most of the blame has been directed at refineries and a formal review will now be carried out

Meanwhile the jobs market is beginning to slow down

No funding for tidal power generation in another swing and and a miss for our useless excuse for a government.

Most people will be selling kidneys at this rate, this is out of hand in the extreme, wont be long before 90% of your wages goes to the energy companies.

                              And it gets worse.

EDF to be nationalised by France, so they will continue to finish the current plants in construction but will very likely not put any more money into the UK.

No funding for tidal power (as an island surrounded by tides) and now fewer nuclear plants being built.
