    I agree entirely Sharkskin.

People seem unable to criticise Gerrard or Torres. Gerrard, especially last night, infuriates me at times. He seems to try and do everything himself a bit too much sometimes. That challenge for the penalty too, what an idiot.

Other members of the team need sort themselves out, not Lucas in my opinion. Nice to see Benitez carries the same sentiment.

You can talk about all the stats you want, but fact remains is that if we want to play how we played last season, we need a better player than Lucas in between Masch and Gerrard. Passing sideways, backwards etc is all well and good, but it's all a bit negative. Gerrard and the rest were forced to come and get the ball of him or Masch. They spend too much time on the ball. Lucas wants a touch or three.. MAN ON!.... Alonso knew where the ball needed to go and quickly. Gerrard and Torres just had to be ready and be expecting.

I think we need to change the formation and style slightly. Especially for Aquaman, I hope Rafa will. Aquilani is more of an attack midfielder. Drop Lucas, maybe get Gerrard deeper in the creative role just behind Aquilani.

Yes, the whole team were more or less turd yesterday, but I really think the weakest link is Lucas and needs to be replaced by someone with confidence and quality.

I don't think there is any chance Gerrard will be getting dropped deeper anytime soon not even when Aquilani returns. Can't help but think someone like Tevez or equivalent would have been an ideal signing ( had we had the cash ) because we seem to look a little bit lightweight all over the pitch at present.

Agree with the Alonso factor, well worn out now, he had an exceptional season last year but i'm sure the year before ( maybe even early last season? ) he wasn't that good at times. Losing him has unbalanced us but we need to move on!

Alonso didn't play in every game for us last season! In fact, it was Lucas who played agains MU in both games wasn't it?
Rafa has always said that Gerrard is not going to play as a standard midfielder - he has only done it a few times since Rafa came and only as cover. SG just is not that good at it anymore which is why Rafa has always tried to keep him away from the middle. The penalty came from his inability to play there. Lucas is still learning, and that is a problem. He has the range of passing of a good midfielder, no question. He does not have the range of Xabi, so we have to change it. I doubt Aquilani will either, Alonso was a very technical player and to hear people damning him cos he "only got 3 assists" last season is to not understand the game.
Masch is picking his game up I think, trying to be more forceful in possession. We have started poorly, no question and it is a bit of a shame we could not have had some easier fixtures to get the rustiness gone but I am still confident over the season. We have conceded some terrible goals but we actually created enough to win the game - Friedel made a number of very good saves even though Villa defended so well. We missed a bit of guile in the middle to break it down, but even so, we had more than the four clear cut chances needed to win the game.

Has anyone seen the huge upturn in results Real have had btw? Seemed to coincide with Xabi moving. Ultimately though, we did not have a choice.

I wouldn't ever play Gerrard in the middle. He gives the ball away far too often (especially playing for England) and when you do that in that position, you leave a huge gap for the opposition to surge forward and cause problems.

Pre 2003/4, Gerrard was a great midfielder, kept the ball and had a great box to box style. That season, he was made captain and had to take more responsibility - he became a super player for Liverpool and as a result, he cannot play conservatively anymore. When he used to play behind Murphy, with Didi, he kept the ball and made good runs. I think he has the best passing in the country, technically, but now he has to take on the mantle of disector as his partner usually just plays it simply. For England, with Barry, Barry makes no risky passes at all.

When was the last time Liverpol won a game by 6/7 goals? Could well do that to us this weekend.

I think it was 8-0 against Besiktas in 2007 and 6 against Derby several game before that. If we do beat Bolton this weekend, I don't think it'll be goal rush time. Would love it if it was 29 nil to us though.

                      You seen us play lately?

Holy ****, we're making Newcastle look like Man Utd.

I'm going for 5-1 to you. Seriously.

Hope I'm wrong, but we'll see.

This is the first post I have made in the Liverpool thread for this season but truth be told, I am already a little bit worried about all the 'Liverpool will be the Champions' articles and comments that were made before the new season kicked off. I half expected a demolishing winning start after the exciting finale to their previous season.

We have lost two games already, which is last seasons total.

Liverpool have really got to wake-up now.

Ah ****, Liverpool have done exactly the same as last time. Scored the goal to get back into the game and then make a stupid mistake to cause themselves even more grief.

Bolton have just had a player sent off. So lets hope we can score a couple to finally get a win.

edit : Fantastic, another Liverpool goal. Lets hope we can push on now. I havent heard much about the sending off, but I'll take any favours we can get at the moment.

Our defending from set-pieces is atrocious. Plus our attacking set-pieces are fairly woeful too.

Stubborn Rafa needs to change something about that zonal marking. As that first Bolton goal went in, there was Carragher on the line surrounded by four white attacking shirts and the rest of our team were stood watching yards away.

Also, what's with the lack of pulling the trigger when we got chances to shoot today?

Apart from that, I'm happy we finally bagged the 3 points.

I wonder if Lucas will get investigated for his cheating today?
