The O'Neill Bounce continues like a pair of 32Js out for a jog. And it's almost as pleasing to watch.
Two cracking strikes last night, and two well-worked regular goals. Players are starting to enjoy their football, and actually look like they want to play.
The Man City game, with Gardner as a fill-in right back, Colback as a temporary left back, and Brown having to go off early, would have sent old Cushion Face into a spiral of excuses, and set the team up for a comfortable defeat. But this same team under new management didn't let it phase them in the slightest, playing to the final whistle and reaping the rewards. Colback hurt himself in the warm up last night, yet still insisted on playing almost the whole game. There's a new ethos developing that's creating its own success and its own luck, totally at odds with the pit of defeatism fostered by Maggo.
It's a reserved optimism as there's always a rocky road ahead, but at least O'Neill seems to have hauled the team out of the relegation mire that BROOCE was kicking us into.

The way Bruce was so negative about the team in press interviews, making excuses all the time and so on, that had to have got to some of the players. Easy to think 'well, if he's throwing excuses around why should I give a fig?' in that situation.
So, Man U or Newcastle tonight then? My fantasy team needs Rooney to bag a few really, but I quite fancy Newcastle to get stuck in.

I'm glad Spurs played Sunderland when it was only O'Neill's second match in charge, it was a hard enough match as it was, seems like they're going to become a tougher and tougher opponent as time goes on. I'm expecting the match up at SOL to be very difficult.
Now that I've done the buttering up, I'll have to whisper very quietly... "Come on Newcastle!" for tonight

Newcastle were immense tonight - well done to them, as that was a win over Utd without any slices of luck or bad refereeing decisions for Fergie to whinge about. But performance of the night? Tim Howard - for not only scoring a goal from inside his own area, but for his class in not celebrating it. Goalkeepers union and all that. Top bloke.

Bruce must be sitting at home wondering what the hell happened. How can the same squad go from ****e to doing what they are now. Obviously the main thing is the attitude and belief the players have but its such a stark difference from Bruce he must surely accept he had to go.
Who was the Bolton fan in here? I was wanting to enquire about the progress of N'gog, always liked him at Liverpool but he didnt have the cutting edge that was required.

Aye. Bruce has made some good signings, but didn't have a clue about how to get the best out of them. As soon as they arrived they sank under the Excuses Cloud and became a bit ****. They'd be shoehorned into the wrong positions, play in an ineffective system, and perform poorly, but know that Bruce would unleash his usual barrel of excuses after the usual defeat. It was a culture of defeatism implicitly encouraged by a manager with no fresh ideas or back up plans. McClean - an impact sub at the bare minimum who added balance to the side - was never played. That sums up what Bruce had become - a dithering fool too scared to try things. McClean was brought on in O'Neill's first game against Venky's and turned the game.
O'Neill has work to do in the window despite any protestations to the contrary. Let's face it - Bendtner is piss poor. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, we're not playing to his 'strengths' (whatever they are - Arsenal couldn't find them either). Being cynical, I'd say he was just a bad egg. He seems to be the only player who hasn't got sucked onto the O'Neill bandwagon - which speaks volumes about his mental makeup. Independence is all well and good at the right time and in the right place, but he's a footballer in a team game, not Gandhi.
