Unintentionally so for the most part. It was clearly over the top, but less tongue in cheek about it in comparison to Snake Eater.

Just finished it last night, I had to play thought the last 8 hours of the game in one sitting, because I was just so sucked in I couldnt put it down!!

Easily one of the best games to grace to PS2!!

I found myself shouting at the screen at the end, hoping Eva wouldnt cop it!!, It was a tense ending "Comeon Eva, nearly there dont give in yet!!", I really wanted them to have a happy ending! The bike chase was supurb!!, and the boss fight was very emotional, especialy when the snake eater theme cuts into it towards the end.

Time to start over again!! Never felt myself wanting to play a game through again, specialy so soon after finishing!

I finally got the game as well.
In my view, the core story is much better than in MGS2 and the historical background is also a big plus.
However, some aspects of the story (and characters) are just plain ridiculous and laughable.
Ironically that?s the same position "Snake" has in in the game when discussing movies with that data girl.
So, I think it is safe to say that those weird story elements are intentionally overdone and function a bit to provoke players that tend to dislike these kind of "unrealistic" aspects in such games. (like Snake does with the movies that the girl mentiones over the radio)
And that?s something I like again.

Now to the rest of the game:
I feel that the technical aspect isn?t as much a highlight as it was in MGS2.
There is less interaction with the environment, for example shooting a flour sack (or whatever it is) doesn?t result in flour pouring out of the bullet hole any more, using the the "survival viewer" and radio results in heavy loading, etc. ...

BUT, in my view, in turn the gameplay has improved significantly in that it is now actually fun to shoot it out with enemy soldiers. (playing on easy at the moment)
That?s something I didn?t expect at all when I first played the game.
The same goes for the boss battles I encountered so far.
As expected though the restricted camera perspective is a little annoying, but not as much as I originally thought.

I haven?t finished the game yet but up to now it?s much more enjoyable in it?s core aspects than I expected (and all of MGS2).

Ah, there's a lot of stuff in there, but more well-hidden. Also, remember that a lot of the backgrounds in 2 were totally static - particle animating flour against the background of a solid warehouse was easy. In 3, the whole of the scenery is animated (grass, falling leaves, fog, sunlight etc.) so is much more processor-intensive.

Agreed, to a point, but I'm glad you end with "...And that?s something I like". Excellent

Good use of English as well, mate. Better than most folks on here (looking at you, Chad )

have you read my review, by the way? Any comments appreciated

Sound design helps immensely in this area too. The jungle comes to life due to the general ambience of hearing the wildlife move and exist around you. It helps to flesh the illusion out of an organic place whose attention isn't on the sole focus of the player. There are lots of subtle tricks Snake Eater uses to enhance the illusion of what can't be properly expressed through the PS2.

One of the most amazing parts was late on swimming underneath the water near the waterfall, and looking up at the trees. Konami use some kind of distortion effect to make it look as though the light is being bent all out of proportion through the branches. Truly beautiful, and shows the attention to detail that went into breathing life into the change of environment.

I need some help with CQC... The circle button is supposed to be pressure sensitive, but everytime I hold an enemy I end up slashing their throat after a few seconds. How the heck do you lightly press a button? I mean it's either pressed or not. Same thing when you're aiming. I always end up firing a shot instead of putting the gun down (the manual says to slowly release the square button.

CQC: hold O to grab and, before he slashes their throat, chuck in another button Press. You have just over a second to do this. Analogue pressure doesn't come into it.

Gun: Raise the gun by lightly holding SQUARE, not pressing it down fully. Here's how it works:

Light press, release = doesn't fire
Light press, harder pressure, release = fire
                  Hard press, release = fire

With automatics, it's different. Light press raises the weapon, hard press fires. You can keep the gun raised with a light press for as long as yu like, then release and not fire. Or, you can keep it lightly pressed then press down hard to fire, and release to stop.

Bloody hell I did it again! Trying to get the Foxhound ranking on Extreme but I always manage to kill someone.

I did not know you were supposed to press circle TWICE to continue to hold them.

EDIT: Pressing circle twice did not work. I can't help it... I must be a natural born killer!

                      Dude, RTFM

I have RTFM. It says to press the buttons lightly, but apparently my killer instincts take over every time I try it.

This may sound stupid, but do you have any tips when it comes to not pressing the buttons too hard?

Just try pressing slowly. There's a biting point. Think of it like a trigger: squeeze gently. Practice that for a bit. Then play MGS3 again ;D

It's not rocket science, just be gentle. You have to actually press hard for a length of time to cut a throat so either your pad's ****ed or you've got fat thumbs.

Heh I do not have fat thumbs.

The best way to practise light pressing is by practicing with the guns, particularly the automatics, which will fire if you press down hard, but won't if you press gently. Try with the AK-47 in first person mode while holding L1; it should all make sense very quickly.
