Other little things bug me, for example if a vehicle isnt damaged why cant you flip it over and use it, like those little buggies for example. I lose the vehicle cos I hit something on the road, and have to carry on walking on foot to get to the next checkpoint, which is really all the game is to me now a checkpoint with occasional fighting in between when Im unable to drive through unscathed.

    Average for me Im afraid.
I was really amazed by Far Cry Instincts when I first saw it. To get such visuals from an Xbox is really an achievement.

But the more I play it the more I agree with your take on it. The AI is just abysmal, actually I'm not sure it could even be called AI. The baddies are so incredibly stupid, you can blast away at them with your pistol and and they won't even move sometimes, then 'sneak' up to them in broad daylight.

It's so linear too. The joy of the PC original was the open nature of it, and those incredible draw distances. Now it feels like a leafy tunnel lined with brain dead enemies.

Total qudos to the programmers who did the rendering engine, they deserve a medal. But perhaps this was a little overly ambitious for the little Xbox afterall.

Roll on Far Cry 2 for the PC.

No more random buying of games for me this generation, I've had enough of being burnt. Though...I'm very tempted to trade in everything of a DS
I play on my DS more than any other system, it's worth it's weight in gold. And with the DS being so heavy, that's a whole lot of gold.

Buy a DS with Ouendan and Castlevania, you'll be hooked for weeks!

Well I really enjoyed it. Agreed the AI isn't great. And it doesn't have the draw distance of its PC version (but then given Far Cry wasn't exactly light on the system requirements I think its pretty unreasonable to expect the same from the XBox).

But I found it very atmospheric, reasonably exciting, and fairly well paced. It had enough of that "whats round the next corner" factor to keep me playing till the end.

        I give it a solid 8 out of 10!

Was there ever anything around the corner? Im about to give up on it, and unless theres something notable to happen I expect I wlll, I never did get anywhere near to completing the PC one as once those monster-things appeared the game became far too bloody hard to be honest but Im tempted to revisit it again. Its a shame as some of the new additions in the Xbox one are quite cool, its annoying its so flawed you get the impression more development time spent on this would of been very worthwhile in the long run.

Good point. I came across a few more bushes too.

I thought FC:I was pretty dull compared to the PC original. The feral powers didn't help make it more exciting, if anything they made it even more easy and straightforward to breeze past a level.

                  Highlights -

Flipping my jeep as I went over a hill and ending up half dead and knee deep in a rice paddy (or something like that). Creeping around hidden in the reeds and fighting off a ton of mercs was one of the best parts in the game.

The battle around the power station, the game really needed more set pieces and good locations like that.

Just finished single player and loved every minute of it. It's not particularly taxing (although the AI improves by leaps and bounds towards the end), and the final bit is a little arse, but I genuinely had fun all the way through.

My only major complaint is that the voice over was waaaay to low in the mix, mind I didn't check if you could change that in options.....shame really cos from what I could catch, I quite enjoyed the story too!

I'm still yet to "get" multi. Just feels really floaty to me. I like my multiplayer FPS stuff to have big stompy boots, like H2. I like to know when I'm hitting someone and when they're hitting me, which I don't really get from FC:I.

Shame there's no harder modes (and yet there is a cheats menu, go figure...). If there had been I probably would have replayed it. As it is, unless multi really grows on me pretty fast, I'll be trading this shortly. Ho-hum....

seems your with EDGE then. just read the review again and could not agree less with them. one more in the list of EDGE's misjudged games.

maybe i've played too much Halo or Perfect Dark in my past life but compared to this FPS gems FC:I is not even in the same league with the overhyped but underrated Killzone.

like marcus, i'm about to give up on it too. i'm still walking the mines - is there anything worth of finishing the game from hereon? otherwise i think i'll better take a look at Brothers in Arms or spent my time with Ninja Gaiden Black.

Anyone who likes Instincts really must play the original PC game. It really is quite different, and a lot better. If you give Instincts and 8/10, then the PC version is a 16/10...

Maybe I'm just too used to playing PC FPS, come to think of it the only console FPS series I ever played is Halo, so perhaps the problems Instincts has are not unusual on console shooters...?

If you are talking about the AI which I think is FCI's biggest problem, then its not commonplace for console FPS games to be like this. Comparisons with Halo are boring, but it does show how console FPS games can be done when its done right. I think in many ways console FPS games are beaten before they are started due to the greatness of that game, much like how Mario 64 was on another level to anything else produced since in that genre. That said, even in its own right I dont think FCI is a good game at all despite any comparisons, like you Ive experienced the PC version which makes it all the more apparant.

Oddly I feel the other way.

I wouldn't say I didn't like Far Cry on the PC but I didn't enjoy it after the first few levels (which were amazing). It became an exercise in frustration.

It's crying out for a decent single player marine only mod.

I just went back and played the PC version.... Well, the differences are quite dramatic to say the least. The draw distance, the graphical detail, the AI, and of course the control.

Maybe you should play further into it Ish. I loved Far Cry PC, played it through to the end twice! And play it on one of the harder difficulty levels too, then the AI is absolutely brutal. A world away from the Rambo stuff you can easily to on Instincts.

I agree with you on the graphics and the AI. Far better. But then given the amount my PC cost they damn well should be! I still think that the PC version of Far Cry is one of the best looking games around.

Maybe I'll dig it out and give it another go.
