I don`t think that the balance in CoD3 is as bad as CoD2 for the fact that there is no PPSH and there seems to be fewer shotgun numpties which is always a good thing but CoD2 is a million miles away from the original CoD in terms of skill needed to use certain weapons.

In the original CoD there were obvious differences between the weapons and not many people went for the BAR for example because it was hard to use but master it and it was awsome. Now two games later there isn`t much skill in any weapon in CoD3, the BAR included. Just let rip with a full burst over any distance and easilly hit the target with hardly any recoil.

The Garand on the other hand is like a machine gun compared to the KAR98K but I think the trade off with the allies is the Thompson. The Thompson has 20 bullets compared to the MP40`s 32 and the MP40 is slightly more accurate in my opinion. I don`t think the MP44 is too bad either but I`ve only just started to get used to the rectangular sight, it`s best used in short bursts.

The scoped rifles have also had any skill needed removed. Even in a standing position the scope hardly moves without having to hold your breath. In CoD the scope would be all over the place unless you were prone and there was no ability to hold your breath.

I don't mind the weapons being easier, just balanced. If making the BAR harder to use (by having greater recoil) helps balance the game, then I'm all for it.

The MP40 is better than the Thompson, but why go for the Thompson anyway when you can have the BAR which beats both of them hands down.

Im not a fan of the Thompson, the sight it quite offputting and I feel it gets in the way of what your seeing.

Just realised, every time I put this on and play single player, it freezes withing a minute or two of starting, then I reset and it works fine for an hour or two.

Trying to do this level with just assualt rifles for the achievement, and after a checkpoint, I spawn with a shotgun and Lee Enfield, so I have to progress to the next part and use only grenades to kill guys and nick their guns!

The Melee achievement will be ace fun trying to do, dont know which one to do it on, anyone done it yet?

I'm up to chapter 6 now on veteran, and am starting to find it a little unfocussed. I'm specifically thinking of a section at the end of the previous chapter where you have to close off the 3 entrances to a warehouse, then hide in the corner for a while, then rocket a tank, then "give cover to some guy that will plant a bomb on the other tank".

Said guy then runs off and no matter what I did he never advanced. I sniped everybody in sight (they respawn, of course) but he didn't move, I could get to the bloody tank myself but he didn't move. In the end I had to go stand in the same place as him to trigger anything - but shooting down the enemy was considered irrelevant.

I know CoD2 also made use of triggers, and that's fine most of the time with 3. Sometimes, however, I'm finding that they're a little sloppy with the placement and motivation of trigger use. They also seem to make use of 'ambient' gunfire whereby 1) you can ignore half the enemy because they're decoration, and 2) sometimes you get shot from impossible directions, like through a rock face.

That said, most of it does work, and I think if you completed CoD2 on vet then you shouldn't have a problem with this. Much of it is easier, with only a couple of tricky points to negotiate (e.g. the bit where a truck rolls down a hill and explodes). The very start of the game - over-the-wall through to the church - is a good indicator of the difficulty level if you want to try it out.

As for MP, it has some issues but it's mainly making me realise how much I suck having not played online FPS for 5+ years (and never without a mouse). It's way more snipery than I'd like and very impersonal (me coming from clan-based TFC, pre-sniper era), but that's more a minor criticism of modern console shooters than of this game per se.

I did it on Level 2: The Island, was pretty fun but not as hard as it sounds. I was only playing on Normal though

I did the melee achievement on level 3 (night drop) - most of the level is in a jeep so it's really easy.

The assault one is quite tricky because only two weapons count - most of the automatics are classed as machine guns so cannot be used. I think the easiest one for this achivement is level two, island.

It depends on your style of play I suppose, but the BAR reloads slower, has a slower rate of fire, has less bullets than the MP40 and you run slower carrying it. It is extremely powerful so it still effective at close quarters but I`d rather have an SMG in those situations so there is still an argument for choice.

If you like steaming in and clearing out houses the SMG`s are better than the BAR or MP44 but you`re at a loss with meduim range combat which makes the BAR and MP44 better all rounders I think. Although I`d rather have an SMG and pick up a rifle of a dead bloke, best of both worlds then.

Cheers for the heads up on the melee achievement, I was going to ask someone about that.

What weapons can you use on the assualt achievement?

I'll try it on 3 then since its in a jeep.

Oh damn, is the Bren classed as one? As I've got one in this new level I'm doing, and wouldnt mind using that for the whole time. I thought MP40's and such like that would be okay for it, but alas they are not.

Just got the achievement for using only enemy weapons though!

Just did the melee achievement on level 2 (seems a lot shorter/quicker to do than level 3!) - and tried for the automatic weapon achievement on level 3 with the Bren. That was the only weapon I used and I didnt get the achievement at the end! Now, I did use a few melee attacks... I dont get the wording on the achievement text, are they saying you CAN or CANT use melee attacks? Anyone that has automatic (and the bolt one for that matter) achievement know?

                      Comment

Yeah I didn't understand the wording either - I just did the mission with a bolt rifle, without grenades or melee to be sure. Still haven't got the assault one :/

                        Comment

You CANT melee. You CAN use grenades. I done it earlier using the Bren, MP44 and a ton of grenades. Its so scary though not using melee, you always use it without thinking if something happens and a guy gets close to you and your fumbling to reload. So you've got to be careful not to do it.

Only single player achievements I have left is:

                          Melee
Not dying or using a checkpoint (God knows what one I'm gonna do that on, maybe the Polish tank mission?)
                          Veteran

That is once I finish the last 1 and a half missions I have left to do.

Then theres the millions of Multiplayer ones which I cant do since I've yet to manage to join a Ranked game!

                          Comment

The not dying one should be easy if you're allowed to do it on an easier difficulty level.
Got the 'minimal damage' one on vet but tbh on vet you either get minimal damage or you're dead. The rest I'll do after I finish the game unless I pick them up by accident. Of course the purple heart is easy to get.

Cheers Rossco, I'll give it another go!

I cant remember which levels I got the "Allergic to Bullets" (minimum injury) and "Still Ticking" (body intact) achievements. I think it was more fluke than skill though!

                              Comment

Regarding the not using melee, I got the 'rifle only' achievement on the first British level and on that one you have to use the melee attack on the first German. In fact there is no other way I could have got that achievement on that level as you start with a sub-machine gun. So it's definately not clear cut.
