I'm more of a Lost Planet than a Gears.

I think the latter is somewhat overrated and probably wouldn't be quite so acclaimed if not for the visuals. Story is drab (as is LP's) and the environment is generally depressing but for all the wrong reasons - I would much prefer an all white game to an all black one especially given as my LCD really doesn't like blacks (NOT a racist comment before we have any smart asses speaking up).

In terms of online outside of the story, LP certainly takes the crown. The maps are huge and quite well varied plus the Mechs and grappling hooks make for an incredibly fun and different experience with each game. That and the fact that I'd happily take a large scale battle to a several player snooze any day of the week. My only problem with the game is that there's a distinct lack of people playing it. Tear yourselves away from GoW's online and you'll find a vastly superior experience in every possible way.

I don't think you can compare the two games at all. They are so very different. But if I'm forced to choose, for me it's gears, it's the best game I've played in years and years, the online modes are brilliant and with a simple update it could be a world beater.

Lost planet however is the mirror opposite for me, the gameplay is so heavily based on frustration I find it hard to enjoy it at all.

I've never played a game that feels so right as gears, yet lost planet feels wrong. Ever tried to get into a mech and instead you take it's weapon off? That is just poor design, map the two actions to different buttons. Climbing up platforms only to misjudge one slightly and end up back at the beginning? These are old flaws that we shouldn't really be putting up with in this day and age. Then again Capcom really don't change much, I'm not a hater (Dead Rising was sublime) but this is SUCH a disappointment to me I'm almost angry.

So yeah, Gears all the way for me with Lost Planet being my biggest disappointement in ages. Though I still say the two are very different games.

EDIT: You know what, I'm about ready to sell this I think. I'm stuck on mission 6. Shots raining from everywhere, two mechs attacking, two rocket launchers attacking, 10+ snow pirates. I just don't feel it's worth the effort.

I see your points above as being personal skill failings, not the fault of the game. If you try to get into a Mech when there is a pop up saying DETACH you need to move around to the front or back of it to enter. If you misjudge a gap and fall back to the begining you are obviously at a platforming section, no doubt you have played platform games before.

I love the simplicity of Gears too though, its a hell of a lot easier to get stuck straight into - LP just takes a bit of time to learn how it needs to be played.

Trying to attach weapons to VSs (whilst driving one) and then exiting in the midst of heated battle is frustrating, mind. And the getting juggled in explosions with no way of recovering is criminal.

Having just completed the game, my thoughts are pretty much it`s an ok game but not great. Levels are a mixed bag with some being very enjoyable and others a chore. Levels can be completed far easier alot of the time by just running past enemies rather than engaging them (which shouldn`t happen really). Boss fights overall were quite good, but were a pain sometimes where they would constantly spam attack you and wouldn`t allow you to get back up. Also the last boss glitched on me where I defeated it but it was still alive .

Multiplayer is a good laugh though, especially with a full room (not so much with a small room as the maps are quite big)

Perhaps I would of been more impressed with lost planet if it was released before gears, but the control system just feels cumbersome after coming of gears. One thing lost planet has going for it though is some of the nicest graphics yet seen on any game and imo the best special effects seen in any game to date.

Just done with the level 7 boss and he went down in no time at all. Rained death on him from above with a mech shotgun and missile launcher. Was done and dusted in a couple of minutes!

Think I'll be going through this again on hard, or maybe even extreme once I've finished. Superb game, and I would expect nothing less from Capcom.

The art is pretty low tech in a way, with vertex lit bump mapped characters (not the usually high poly normal mapped stuff most people are doing now), and the scenery is similarly simple. Looks beautiful all the same though, just goes to show what good art direction can do.

Also got the Moth achievement. So that's groovy.
Oh and if we must compare. Gears is better. But this does feel very different.

Sorry I don't agree mate. It's not a personal skill issue if you are RUSHING to a mech after another has been downed, only to hit the button and just as you do it, it pops up with "remove weapon" and it's too late...

Do you find it a skill issue that when you are hit with a rocket from a mech that it creates SO much smoke you can't see where the enemy is, but they can see you and continue to fire at you? Is it a skill issue that if you ARE hit, they can repeatedly hit you before you can get up and move and you die? OK you might say "you shouldn't get hit by a rocket if you are good enough" but I'm not buying that, no way. How about the fact that getting into a mech takes time to fire up, in which time they have already aimed and are already firing rockets at you?

This isn't a platform game however and therefore I feel things like that in games like this are things that don't need to be there and are lazy.

I've got to level 6 and played it for roughly 5/6 hours on two seperate difficulties, I'm STILL trying to give it a chance but it's just not happening. It is a game that requires you to play a level over and over until you find the AI's weakness, which you exploit, some take less time than others. I don't find it enjoyable when it's literally a case of playing a boss over and over until you figure out the way to tackle him.

I'm not saying this is the worst game ever however, far from it. I said it before and I'll say it again, I think Gears may have ruined a lot of games for me now, it's so simple and feels so good and right.

I'm not a crap gamer, I can't remember a single game I've struggled at like I do this, let alone a game that has frustrated me this much. It could have been excellent but I feel it's let down by some serious gameplay faults that I can't forgive.

You can question my skill if you like but at the moment it's simple, I just don't like this game, I want to but I can't forgive what I feel are faults in the gameplay. I was so looking forward to it but yeah, just don't like it. I don't really like the multiplayer version of the game either to be honest at the moment.

I hope I change my mind though...

I must admit I haven't had any problems with removing guns from the mechs. As long as you're either at the direct front or back you're going in. My issues are with picking up the two sets of rockets on the mound on the mission5 boss, the mech doesn't seem to stand still as it's a narrow surface so it's tricky picking up the guns during the prompt phase. You can time it so that when he comes swooping in you're already in mid-air and descending down onto them giving yourself a spare 2/3 seconds before he recovers and starts nuking you to **** from 100%.

You really have to cram in the pain on him and finish that last 50% fast, give him one chance and it's all over. After about 20attempts I found myself double jumping off after picking up the rockets and hammering him to 30% before even landing.

LOL. I was carrying the rocket launcher as a secondary weapon for suicide purposes once losing my mech after his recovery.

I haven't had any problems with the context sensitive B button either. Works every time for me.

Finished up level 8 this evening and the boss at the end was easy again. Once you get used to flying with the mechs it becomes even more of a Gun Valkyrie homage, and like GV flying makes it all click into place.

                        Superb game.

Green Eye is now much nastier. He sets all the same rules as before but he's just 100x meaner somehow. However I noticed some weird tricks this time like getting him to crawl over me at an angle against the silo wall so I don't take any damage. Like Mr. Wasp, he's a piece of piss until you expose his face at 50%, and then he just tramples all over you like you're an important document that's been accidentally set on fire.

Getting up to him was a good laugh this time. The NEVEC dudes on the run-up entertained me with some massive blowing up everywhere action with me diving through the smoke to blow even more mechs and chi-chi men up. They're gonna get some revenge on the next mission though as I had a bit of trouble with that before due to those evil sentry drones with the red lasers, I had tons of T-ENG before as well - that's going to be severed this time ><.

Some absolutely class action online as well. It's no wonder I can't sleep with so much excitement. (._.') This has to be the first ever multiplayer game that looks and feels like I'm playing 1-player. Diving for cover behind a wall just before four homing lasers arc from across the map in my direction is stunningly cinematic.

Liking your stories of EXTREME battles Dave, not so sure I'm looking forward to having to brave the fight myself.

It looks like Lost Planet is getting Halo 2 style Online Stat Tracking

I'm impressed with the effort Capcom are putting into the online stuff.

Ok. Here it is. My first Youtube vid of me defeating the Mission 1 Boss on Extreme difficulty.

You might have to crank the volume up on the speakers at home 'cause it's a little quiet.
It's basically just showing the methods to avoid all the five-way attack of death from all those rolling Akrid ****ers. I very nearly die during one part because I was too late in diving out of the boss' way. The ****er gets it in the end though. Enjoy.

WOW! Never new that either! Nice effort!

Yeah - they want a combat game that Westerners AND Easterners want to play, if they rack up the numbers it could be the most popular online shooter ever on a worldwide scale. It's pretty obvious people in the east prefer being at work to playing Halo 2, considering the state of it's online community who can blame them.

I really hope we see a few more maps in time once we're bored of these ones. They are class maps though what we've got so far.
