Seems that a real live pre-release of the game ( and not just a gigabyte of gay p0rn ) is now freely avalible from various web sources ( say no more )

      Oh dear

      Poor Valve

They struggled so long to keep everything under wraps. Seems it was all for naught

Sort of knocks the whole idea that the code was intentionally leaked on it's head, doesn't it?

Have a search on groups.google.com using +"half life 2" +source +code (no this won't get you the source code), what it will give you is loads of conspiracy theories.

I think my favourite has to be that people from nVidia hacked and released the code after finding ATI employees had been optomising the code for their cards.

            Half-Life 2 pre-release version released

Messing around with the physics on a resourceless custom map is one thing, but I won't be downloading this one!

              this is really terrible.

at least us scrupulous types will still buy the game. if it ever gets released...

                Holy Crap !

It looks like this leaked game is no joke either !

Warning - Maybe a slight spoiler below ( Very slight )

                End of possible slight spoiler

There were others but I tore myself away from them - and the other little bits of info that were just tempting me to look

Details of the other vehicles and ( if I'd looked a bit longer ) other monsters were all there !

It seems a bit to much that someone would be making all this stuff up. If it is, the person(s) who did them were bloody good work and someone should hire them

And there's Valve banging on about a 2004 release !

How stupid would that be now ?

Half of their intended target will have played it by then it seems.

I'm not gonna be looking at any Half Life 2 forums for a while now. It seems the potential for spoliers is huge !!

This feels like the Daikatana episode all over again.

My mate was looking forward to playing this on his X-Box at Christmas - make that Christmas 2007.

F'n double post - my first ever. ft:

Oh well, time to dig out the N64 and realise that Perfect Dark still owns everything that there is to come for the next 10 years - even the HL2 pre-release, unless of course GFX and throwing mattresses down stairs is all you're worried about.

                    *runs and hides*

Something like this was bound to happen though, in a time where we can download music for absolutely free and then carry it around with us on little silver storage devices is it really such a big surprise that a company producing a much hyped PC game has been hacked into and their code spread around the net like butter?

One day everything will be public domain.

And that's what's sad. I shall only be going to HL2 forums when given a link by someone on this forum when they agree there are no spoilers...

                      ****!

apparently we wont be playing HL2 till april next year.

TBH blaming the leak for this is IMO bollocks as the game was clearly never ready for release this "holiday" most of the time i would class this as rubbish but it is a reuters website that the quote came from.

Seems also that there is a new release with proper textures and such like as well seems like the valve release p'd off the hackers so much they released more of the game in spite..

                        interesting developments....

Christ. I feel bad for Valve.

All that work completely screwed over in the space of a few weeks. Of course, it's not as if Half Life 2 has been destroyed...

But the anticipation, planning, build up and impact has been seriously affected. When Half-Life 2 is released now, it'll meet a flat pan-cake reception, because a lot of potential consumers are already going to know what's in store. Not only that, but Valve's potential profit from the game is in serious danger. All those moaning fans who bitched about the game missing its September 30th date, and holding it personally against Valve...

Well, they're most likely going to download the beta/pre-release and the updated fixes which will no doubt hit the net in coming months. Half Life 2 is going to have a messy birth, because it's not going to reach many in whole. Just in bits and chunks...

Poor Valve. If I'd put my heart and soul into coding a game for nigh on five years, and known how high-profile the project was... Just to see all that slip away from your control... It must be so frustrating. Like going through hell I imagine.

                          Comment

Hmmm, whilst I had no sympathies for Valve about the source code leak, this pre-release version leak is no doubt a bigger deal. Not so much how it affects Valve (so I guess that makes me a bit of **** but I don't care) but more how spoilers and such are going to be all over the place now making the Internet a veritable minefield of HL2 information.

I don't want to know what happens, what enemies I will be facing or where I will be battling them, thanks to some inpatient haX0r kiddie. I wanted to tear the shrinkwrapping of the game case, install it on my PC, turn the lights down low, the sound up high, grab a bottle of Cherry Coke and become engrossed in Gordon Freeman's world once more.

Now, all that stands between that and the experience being undermined is a mistaken click on an Internet link that could potentially reveal all this game's secrets.

Guess I have to be extra vigilant when browsing from now on.

                            Comment

surely the release of the source code would not have put back a game 6 months? It's a setback for sure but surely most of the level archetecture and textures would have been done by now? Did they not have backups? (clearly they have) so why six months?
The anticipation was building for a release this year, not for a game that clearly was never ready and was never going to be ready for this year why make up a release date that you were never going to keep?
To have any portion of your work stolen from your very place of work must however have been sole destroying and a part of me is saddened by it.
I'm sure Ati are as pissed as anyone as the game thats not going to be released this year runs far better on their card than nvidias (at the moment) who is to say by the time this comes out it wont be the other way round.
This does seem awfully convieniant IMO doom 3 was leaked and has it pushed the release date back not as far as i was aware....Was it announced at E3 as they couldn't really show it anywhere else?

who knows? it is still hopefully gonna be a kickass game just its not done itself any favours with this thats all.

Having bought the original HL about three years after release, and having every moment spoiled by magazines, I agree with C' about having to avoid everything. The game didn't have the same effect on me as everyone else, because I came to it so late. Won't be making that mistake again.

On the other hand, we now have a HL2 Vs Halo 2 showdown. Fight!
