    Highlights for me so far:

. The 'Manhacks' - just plain nasty, tbh.
. First walking out of the train station and seeing *just* how good the graphics are
. All the bits that they released bink videos of.
. Flying along in the airboat when, all of a sudden, that giant ****-off chimney stack just starts falling over. I pushed the throttle all the way (Smashey and Nicey style) and just went aaaaaaarrrrrrrghhhh! Sadly, it fell right on my head, though it did surprisingly little damage for a 200ft high tube of bricks.
. Dog - just an incredibly articulated and animated model. The graphics went up yet another notch for me when he appeared.
. The magnum - one of the best weapons evah, tbh. He has to hold it with two hands, for chrissakes! I've 'well do ya, punk?'d a good few zombies in Ravenholm. That's when I'm not firing cans of paint at them, of course.

Does the game get graphically more whore-ish later? Will performance start to suffer?
I've just got to City 17 again. And yes, it slows down lots on my system (P4 2.4 1.25Gb RAM and GF6800GT). But it's all good.

I'm back there too. And the sound stutter has returned with a vengence, even more so than before. Say hello to the same sound twice, three or four times every ten seconds or so.

            God damn your asses, sirs.

This means disabling what, AA and/ or AF, 5.1 sound? Tell me before I suffer (which could be some time, I'm only on Water Hazard so far)

I kept mine at defaults, and the only issues I have is the loading of new sections, right at the start there is some overlap loading, which juggles abit, just like the old one. Maybe you should stop download pr0n whilst playing?

Right after I typed that, I got the problem almost sorted (much better than it was before).

A very helpful post I found on halflife2.net's forums. Possible solutions:

                ------1-----
                Try:

                snd_async_fullyasync 1

See if it's any better. It might de-sync some of the dialog, but it should remove the stuttering.

                Rick
                Valve

                ------2-----

Getting the game to load as much of its self into memory as possible also helps a lot; to do this, right click on Half-Life 2 in steam and select properties, then click launch options, put in "-heapsize 256000" without the quote marks. For the number, choose half your total system memory, in the examples case, its for a system with 512megs ram, you should use 512000 for systems with a gig of ram.

                ------3-----

I had the same problem, fixed it. Edit the config.cfg file if the hl2\cfg folder and set the following.

                cl_forcepreload "1"
                sv_forcepreload "1"

                cl_smooth "0"

The first 2 were there but set to "0", I had to add the last line.
I still get the odd tick but few and far between and it only lasts an instant.

I hope this helps a lot of people.

                ------4-----

If you're still getting sound stuttering, or popping, or static after the above (which should help with HD pauses, but not the sound pauses), then change the following setting in config.cfg - eliminated sound stuttering completely for me.

snd_mixahead is originally set to "0.1"

Change it to a higher number - the number will vary by PC, but for me it was:

                snd_mixahead "0.5"

That'll fix it - if it doesn't, set the number higher. If you set it lower than the default setting, the popping/stuttering gets much worse,

With the above, that should fix it.
Numbers 3 and 4 have worked wonders for me in the config file. The problem is much, much better. Almost non-existant for the most part now.

Guys... City 17... On return - Wow. Just wow.

Anyone else finding the load times, both initial start up and mid level pauses are on the wrong side of acceptable?

Stalls for minutes at a time, then judders back to live eventually throwing me or my vehicle off on some crazy viewpoint.

Concept: You sir are a hero. I no longer damn your ass.

And yes, I think it's a pain how the loading re-centres your view. Really doesn't help when you're in a vehicle.

                      Just got the buggy

Playing through on hard is a slog, but like Jibber said earlier, its more John Mclaine that Col. John Matrix.

There's so many little touches in this game that make it brilliant.

Like on the coastline those vibration device's are a touch of class and brilliance. Ideas like that just shine through.

I didn't notice that loading recenters you viewpoint. In vehicles its usually my complete lack of driving ability that gives the crazy viewpoint

Thanks for those fixes as well Concept. I think I'll go and tinker with it now.

Hopefully by the time I get back to City 17, Valve will have released a patch

I really like the day / night cycle they have going as you progress through the levels. It really helps with the atmosphere.

Also with the vehicles: I love the way its not just a "chase". I don't usually like vehicle sections as, like in Call of Duty, they're just a chase and nothing else. But the way they're woven into the story and the way you have to stop and do things en route really makes it feel like your genuinely trying to get somewhere.

Also the loading times... you guys need to buy faster hard drives . Only joking... I've not found them too bad. Though they're not far off being problematic.

                        Superb stuff

Well my previous HOM problem was solved by resorting to the earliest autosave, so now I finally got to the g-gun \o/
I find the vehicles drive well if you just leave the mouse alone (and centred), unless you need to shoot things in which case the driving just kind of happens by itself.
I'll also try those settings, although the stutters have only been at load points (which haven't been toooo long... maybe 15 seconds). I guess increasing the heapsize will increase the load times....

Well, none of those tips for the stuttering did anything for me.

If anything they made it worse, as the settings made the whole game sound like it was being played down the other end of a cardboard tube

Change the mixahead setting back - I can't imagine the pre-load settings make a difference to the sound quality.
