Just finished the single player and I'm not sure what to think.
Sure, the combat was as fun and adrenaline pumping as it's always been, the music still gave me shivers and there were some amazingly chreographed cut-scene moments but there was something missing. I don't want to say it was
the lack of the Master Chief as I really enjoyed ODST for that reason. Maybe, as this was Bungie's last Halo game they should have given the big fella a better send-off before the series is (potentially) dragged down by another developer. Maybe he should have made an appearance at the very end by Bungie redoing the opening of the first game
.
The story was remarkably straightforward in this as a stand alone experience in terms of what Noble Team have to do and I like the way
it ties into the start of the first game
. I guess it's when you try to expand out that things can get a little convoluted and overly geeky sci-fi fanboyish.
I suppose the last few Halo games have more been about the multi-player experience and that's why I'm so glad that Bungie developed Firefight as competitive MP modes leave me a little cold. So far Gruntpocalypse and Rocketfight have seen plenty of action. So much fun.

Teddy - massive end game spoiler to answer one of your points
If you push right after the gun sequence on The Piller of Autumn level, the final cutscene will take place within the dropship rather than from Nobal Six's view. In the dropship you see (in cryostatus)... guess who!
.
The more I play this the more I like it. It's such a well-rounded package. I'm having so much fun just jumping between all the different modes and options; redoing campaign missions and my current favourite, Firefight matchmaking with randomers. Had a game where two people dropped before the game started properly, so it was just two of us doing Firefight Snipers on Waterfront. Was absolutely insane, one of the best gaming experiences I've had all year.

I'm working through the campaign at the moment which is enjoyable enough although probably my favourite improvement at the moment is the audio as I think the audio effect the plasma bursts have now when they hit the ground is spot on. I find it makes the game more immersive in comparison to the more fake sounding effects with the plasma weaponry in previous games if that makes any sense for an entirely fictional technology.
Is Firefight improved over ODST at all? The Horde mode in Gears of War 2 was by far my favourite mode as it was in UT 2003 as well but I didn't get on with the version in ODST. There never seemed enough weaponry leaving you taking on Wraiths and Brutes with pistols which was just annoying.

Thats my major gripe with the AI, its brilliant on Covenant forces but when it comes to friendly it goes all to ****.
I've had fellow Spartan's just standing there waiting outside by the battlefield. Its been the same in all games though unfortunatly, wish they managed to improve it somewhat.

Finally got round to finishing reach and have to say the ending brought a tear to my eye lol
Is it the best Halo yet? Definately. Lots of variety in the environments, kept pushing you forward and some huge battles leading up towards the end which made you really feel like you were in a middle of a battle zone.
Was unsure about them dropping dual wielding at first, but as I played through it I think it works alot better without and gave better balance to the game.
Only played through it on normal, so it`s time to delve back in and up it to heroic now

Bah, I died just as a checkpoint hit. Endless deaths so a mission restart is requiredI was hoping they'd fix that.
The Daily challenges are going to be the end of me, can't help but get them all! They've done so much good work with the credit system, such a shame that the stuff you get to buy is so pointless. Would have been nice to spend the credits on artwork, making-of docs, edited scenes etc.

Finished the campaign on Normal yesterday and immediately restarted on Heroic. The last level was suitably epic and connected Reach with CE in a good way.
I've only played one level so far on Heroic, but the challenge is substantially ramped up from Normal and so is the fun factor, and Normal was incredible!
If I compare this to Combat Evolved (and remove the rose-tinted glasses) this might be my favorite Halo. Yes, the friendly AI is still crap but I guess I've come to accept that as part of the package.

I dont understand bungies Decsion to let you make yourself invincible during a firefight game and still unlock achievments, yet if the capign is played on easy (where you can at least still die) no achiements unlock.
As much as I am loving the game there seems to be alot about it that they havent thought through.
