Really having difficulties with the new media streaming stuff. Friday evening I just turned the machine on and it found my PC and I was able to pull all music (and even some vids) off without any problems.

Since then though, nothing.

Usually no options to stream are available under Music or Video but occasionally I'll see my PC show up then disappear quickly. Really odd.

So I just tested RGB @ full and you want to leave it as limit, unless you like to increase banding.

RGB @ Limit - Levels stay where they are. Y 1, CbCr 128 will be RGB 1, 1, 1 when done.
RGB @ Full - Levels get compressed. Y 1, CbCr 128 will be RGB 16, 16, 16 when done. (Best guess based on looking at image)
Full is different than the usual expansion where Y 16, CbCr 128 becomes RGB 0, 0, 0.

The best video quality is:

Output - YCbCr
RGB - Limit
Super White - On

BTB is still passed when RGB is set to limit, just bring brightness up to see it. Then turn brightness back down where it belongs. When you set brightness based on RGB limit and then switch to RGB full, you will see the BTB stripe. This is because you just remapped Y 7, CbCr 128 (the BTB stripe) to a much higher value.

Limited is using video levels - that means black starts at 16, and white is 235, which means there are 219 possible steps in brightness.

If the TV is expecting video levels, anything below 16, and above 235 is automatically "clipped." Which means it turns pure black below 16, and pure white above 235.

If the TV is expecting video levels, as the PS3 is outputting 16 for "black" it means things look washed out.


Switching to full sets the PS3 to output PC levels, 0-255. This gives 255 steps of brightness, allowing for smoother gradations.

If your display supports full, then you're best to use it, however if it doesn't support full rgb, it means that you lose about 6% of all the shadow, as your display is clipping everything below 16.

It seems this person's display does not support full RGB.

Super white should only be enabled if your TV supports HDMI v1.3

EDIT: I may be wrong about Super White actually - looks like it's just a setting to toggle blacker-than-black and whiter-than-white with DVDs.

How do people think the PS3 upscaling compares to the 360 upscaling of DVDs?

At first I thought the 360 handled it better but having compared them disc to disc I think I've gone in favour of the PS3 upscaling...I think! The 360 does look smoother but I seem to think it's just blurring rather than being higher quality.

Any thoughts? I know there are people here will be able to judge better than me.

The PS3 is a significantly better DVD player, as it does a great job on Cadence Detection (though not perfect) whereas the 360 doesn't even pass 3:2.

This basically means that it's getting twice the resolution out of the discs.

I found it more uncomfortable at first on the PS3 due to it not being as "soft" but I'm happy with it now.

hey andrewfee, I'd like to say thanks for the tips you gave on tweaking the brightness etc, it now looks a lot better on ps3 or wii. nice one

Everyone says you can't play a video over 4GB, but I have a 15GB .mpg (renamed from .ts) file that plays fine.

Curiously the audio seems to play as 2.0, dispite being 5.1 AC3 (I can tell it's 2.0 cause my speakers kicks into PL2 mode).
Runs perfect otherwise, dispite being a 1920x1080 interlaced file.

I find it strange the ps3 parses filetype by filename and not magic string or something, thats very windows.

I'm not really sure if this will be of use to anybody here but I though I'd post it anyway:

Since the 1.80 update I'd been having a few problems with the PSN, it was slower than usual and I would sometimes be disconnected when trying to buy things from a Store.

Anybody else have these problems too?

I've had a good play with it and have managed to sort it out now!

The problem was with the UPnP Media Sharing abilities that had been added. I'm not sure why it happens but there seems to be a conflict.

If you are having the same problem just switch it off ilike this...

It's not a big issue as you can't access your media & browse at the same time anyway. I just leave mine off now and switch in on when it is needed.

I hope this helps other people if they were having similar problems?

It would depend on your specific router set up I imagine. This seems to be a work around for me though as it's working at the old speed and not dropping out at all.

I'm not convinced it will sort out DNS errors...hopefully though.

If you look at the US forums, the last FW just seemed to not like wifi & killed a load of networks.
