    Guys, i need some help.

I've got windows media player 11 set up to share the media I have. The PS3 sucessfully streams pictures and music. But whenever i choose a Vid, It won't play and i get an error message stating that a connection to the media server could not be established.

The vid files by the way are 100mb plus.

    Can anyone offer any advice?

Basically that's because the PS3 won't stream that format...

The ONLY format I have succesfully streamed is MPEG!

I have mine on full but I'm not sure if its supposed to be , the brightness seems a bit high on the bar.. but it looks pretty nice, I could see the same or more boxes.. I think.

oh well if its not right I can just reset it

The gamma options on your BRAVIA should let you have brightness lower while still being able to see detail.

mm, just tried VT3 and VF5 and it seems a bit .. uh .. brighter and easier to see detail than normal but not sure wether its due to the brightness being up more, or the full or limited option..

            bah this calibration lark

First, save this image, and put it on a memory card or something so that you can view it on the PS3:

With the option set to limited, adjust the brightness control on your TV until you can see most/all of the boxes. There are 12 boxes there, but you might not be able to see them all. You should hopefully be able to see at least 9/10 of them.

Now switch it over to Full range. Can you still see all the boxes? It's very likely that you will only see a full black screen now if you're using a HDTV rather than a DVI monitor.

If you can turn up the brightness control and see the same number of boxes again, then it seems your display does support the full range. If it stays black, or you can't see as many boxes as before, your TV does not support the full range option and you should be using limited.

Most HDTVs should have it set to limited.
So I downloaded the image onto my PS3 & performed the above test, I can see all twelve boxes on limited range & when I switch to full range I can see 10/11 of them.

I assume that this implies I can use the full range setting which is all well & good ( my tv is a Samsung 32" LCD ), unfortunately when I turn the PS3 off & then back on again it goes back to displaying in limited range. But the really weird point is that it still says Full in the menu so I have to set it back to Limited, which changes nothing, & then re-enable it again for it to take effect.

              Any ideas?

If you can still see most/all of them, Full range should be fine. I'm not sure what's going on though, as it seems some people have the option reset and others (like myself) have it stick.

Have you tried just turning the machine on, setting it to full, and turning it off to see if it sticks then? How are you turning it off? (I always use the PS button on the pad)

                EDIT: Missed this:

Brightness is usually too low by default on most TVs, so it's probably correct. The best setting may not let you see all of the boxes though. On some of the TVs I've owned, you would maybe see 10/12 boxes at 60 brightness, but to see the last two you would need 90 brightness, which is far too high. In that case, it's best to sacrifice some shadow detail to get better blacks.

As long as you can see 4/5 boxes in the top row, you should be fine, as it means you'll at least be seeing most of the shadow detail in the picture.

yeah i'd estimate its on about 70-75 max

thanks, definitely looks better ,although I'm not sure it's supposed to be on 'full' and will check if it sticks after power-off later ..

spent 2-3 hours testing the upscaling (games) on my Samsung F40LE71 1080p lcd and what a waste of time. Looked no were as good as a direct component feed via 480i/480p, from a ps2...

not something to do with upscaling but i did notice that it appeared after updating to 1.8 and i haven't seen this anywhere.

I clicked it and got this:

I have no idea as to what it says since I don't speak/read/write Japanese.

                      Any ideas people?

A subtle nice change is the more visible cursor in the text input panel i.e. A bright green flashing vertical line. Was a bit hard to see before.

For those with 720P sets it might still be better for you to set your output resolution to 1080i when watching bluray movies. I'm sure I noticed a reduction in picture quality (detail) when watching CR with the PS3 converting to 720p. So I tried the test patterns that come with the disk (enter 7669 in the film menu). The second pattern, frequency, shows a marked drop in quality, producing interference patterns on 720p long before 1080i does.

MGS3 Subsistance PAL always worked before this update, MGS2 didn't for me though, and it does now .. looks great in 720P
