Hehe I still havent bothered upgrading to 1.81 considering how long it takes me to download via the PS3!

"H.264/MPEG-4"... Which one is DIVX? Am I any closer to being able to watch TV shows that I've downloaded on my PS3 yet?

DIVX is it's own codec, so when it adds DIVX support it'll say it. You can download to your PC and transfer to the console in memory stick format, if it really takes that long.

It seriously took hours to get to just over 50% previously, so I did end up doing as you say, and updated it (much quicker!) via the PC/memorystick.

Weird isn't it? My updates (Even the major ones) have never taken any more than about 20 minutes (Minor ones usually between 5 and 10 minutes) and I'm using wireless through the PS3. My console is a US one though, perhaps there's more bandwidth available in that region?

Best bet though is probably not to do it when it's just announced. Leave it a few days when less people will be trying to grab it.

It is weird. Mine are always slow. I tried to get the 1.81 last week when I watched a BD movie, but gave up because it was taking so long (and I wasnt that fussed about the extra features).

May well be something to do with me having a Japanese PS3 - all those extra hops across the internet etc.... as the UK Marketplace works fine, and I can download demos and the like quite quickly. Do any other Japanese PS3 owners suffer similar problems?

Cool, the PS3 gets its monthly switch on.

New firmware update coming soon - Sony has announced a new firmware update (V1.82) for the PS3 that takes it a step closer to customising game soundtracks. In a blog posting, Sony's Eric Lempel,...click for more

Excuse the source, but they're suggesting that the ability for custom soundtracks is getting close(r). Not interested in them myself, but I know a lot of people care.

I did do until the PS3 launched in Europe. Since then the download speed and store entry have been much quicker.

1.82 is out now, just had a late night session of Pro Evo with a mate and came back to the dashboard to find it's been released. Gonna try Manhunt to see if it works with it yet.

                    Edit - No Manhunt

Strangely i turned on my PS3 tonight, and all the saved settings were lost What is the best option to set DVD upscaling to? Normal, Double or Full? Watching Die Hard on DVD with it set to normal gives me vertical borders down each side, so i set it to full. Will this lose me some of the picture/stretch the image out of proportion though? I have a Toshiba WLT68 running through HDMI btw if that makes a difference.
                      Thanks for any advice

I would say if you chose normal and it jumped into bordered that is probably the aspect ratio of the film, unless you are sure it is full widescreen normally.

Yep, but the borders are vertical, down each side of the screen, as well as the expected horizontal borders. Confused.com.

So its not just 4:3, there are borders horizontally as well as vertically?

Yeah, same with a few films i tried, though not all. I get borders horizontally as well as vertically so the picture kind of sits in the middle of the screen. That's with the actual tv set to 'wide' btw so it's not that. If i change the option on the ps3 from 'normal' to 'full' it eliminates the vertical borders down the side leaving just the expected horizontal borders (2.35 :1 movie) but i'm pretty sure it stretches the picture, messing with the aspect ratio...
                              Any explanations or advice appreciated!

I have the same TV with HDMI connection and "Double Scale" is the only option that leaves me with the borders down the sides.

I use the normal setting and as far as I can see the image doesn't get cropped in any way. Its just blown up to fit the width of the TV - I can pause a movie when something I can measure like a car is at the edge of the frame and the same amount of car is visible on every setting.

Too bad I don't have many Japanese discs as PS3 is pretty good with DVDs.
