Retailers are doing what they always do with new consoles. At the start they have to group the console games together, due to lack of space. Nintendo is the one to blame here, as the box art is way too similar across the models. People didn't complain about Wii games among Gamecube games, or XBox 360 games among XBox games. Even the similarly named Game Boy Advance sported a brand new logo and a new box design compared to the previous Game Boy and Game Boy Color games.

Early adopters always get screwed. Be it by lack of games, or a price drop, or hell...both! This isn't news, nor is it some secret information hidden only for the elite internet cliques. The information to make an informed decision has never been more easily accessable.
Have to agree with this 100%.

I haven't bought a 3DS yet, because of two reasons: the price was too high (for me) and there are no games out that are must for me. If you buy new consumer electronics at launch, you'll pay more for just the hype than if you're patient and wait 6-12 months after the release.

That said, I also think that the 3DS launch line-up was and has been quite poor so far.

I'm with Dave on this one,I've loved the machine since picking it up at launch and with the e shop finally starting to shape up as well as the big titles are coming and the free ambassador games happy days

To be honest, I'm kind of glad there isn't tons of games out atm as there is no way I could find the time to play them all anyway what with owning a 360 and a PS3. The three games I currently own for the machine is enough for the moment, Zelda OOT, DOA Dimensions and RR. Obviously I am looking forward to more choice in the future, and there seems to be some great games coming up in the future!

For me I'd just like to see more proof of third parties showing an interest. Or Nintendo specifically stating they're courting them and understand how important they are for the success of the machine.

Nintendo need to be giving incentives for third parties to jump aboard and I can't see any evidence of this happening..

I don't know, the promise of being just out of the top 40 in the all formats chart should be incentive enough!

Looks like the 3DS is the new videogame marmite.

Yeah, man. Like that time Jedward played Dragon Quest IX by the pool and they were all like "NICE HAT!" or something.

Because the 3DS will just fly off the shelves of they have more quality celeb endorsements like this lol, it's a miracle dragon quest sold anything over here. Nintendo heres a little tip, don't advertise with celebs who i want to punch in the face it doesn't do you any favours lol.

well I'm going to do something pretty shocking here, and stick up for the games line up so far. PS3 for example was released with some utter garbage (Genji, anyone?) and also had bugger all worth having for the system for some considerable time.

Games simply aren't the issue for the system it's got enough and some good stuff heading out for release at the end of the year - probably better then any year 1 of recent memory. I guess the issue is after this year, but I would reckon Nintendo will have something up their sleeve.

Having read the article on Eurogamer I also think the guy thats written it is simply too core gamer focussed. Nintendo did what they had to in order to ensure the DS and the Wii were a success and frankly core gamers were never part of that concept. The issue now is that the casual market simply doesn't exist anymore or rather its changed and this is an issue where I do agree with the Eurogamer Journalist. The 3DS doesn't offer enough for the casual market these days especially with the likes of iOS and Android and from the get go it's been far too overpriced.

So with that only the core audience remain and what were left with is a machine that doesn't cater to our gaming needs. Not enough buttons/sticks and the online infrustracture in terms of store and friend interaction is somewhat lacking. The shoddy 3D and general poor build quality of the machine doesn't help it's cause either.

To sum up then, Nintendo in my opinion actually thought about the game line-up but quite frankly not much else. They hadn't correctly analysed the changes in the casual market and hadn't bothered to entice the core gamer. They ultimately expected the machine to sell on former glories and gimmicks and assumed the thoughtful game choices were enough to ensure the machine was a commercial success.

And thats my ultimate issue with this machine lack of thought into its design and build quality, something I doubted I'd ever say about them.

The worst thing about Jedward is that they're nearly 20yrs old. If they don't grow up soon someone is going to make a psychological referral on their behalf.

Personally I think the casual market still exists as evidenced by the still overall decent NDS and Wii related sales, Kinect and the affore mentioned iOS tat. I also don't begrudge Nintendo not making a huge new gimmick with the 3DS as it's unreasonable to expect every generation when they have already contributed more than any other company in this area. Though understandable, they clearly expected 3D to be a bigger hit than it is. When the system was in development 3D was all the rage and I can see why they would think glassesless 3D on it's own would blow peoples minds. Despite rushing to market apathy had already begun to set in though and that means people start rummaging through its features list and come up disappointed.

Nintendo should have focused on capturing the core as a base user given that the casual market over the last few years has grown more and more uninformed and moronic, happy to think ?1.59 for a game is amazing value when many stump up ?500 every 12 months for the latest fractional incremental version of the device to play on. That market is approaching at state whereby it's almost easier for a company not to be involved than it is to try and cash in and despite their successes there Nintendo's business strategies just don't match.

The ongoing overall sales figures prove the traditional handheld market exists as strong as it ever has been but I'd say it's booming growth period is over for now and Nintendo and Sony need to work to capture as much of the existing market space as possible rather than chasing new concepts and ideas all the time. 3DS and PSV are largely built to do this but they're not positioned right, both containing obvious flaws that by now both companies should know better by

The Jedward advert was truly horrible. I read they both rake in millions though, so I presume people are buying into their stuff enough for Nintendo to think that was a good idea :P
