            Oh boy...

Latest rumour : clip on right analogue pad incoming. This site has a pretty good track record recently with its rumours too.

The console should've had 2 from the start (even if just to make sure lefties can play pad+touchscreen games) but this would be a distaster.

Here's the same news on Eurogamer for us non-fluent in French.

Nintendo is preparing both an external second circle pad add-on for the 3DS, as well as an entirely new model which "ra…

They're also saying the new model would "tone down 3D capabilities".

Have to say, that would be pretty radical decision indeed.

They panicked and rushed the 3DS out when it should've spent another 3 months gestating and being tweaked, doing the same again with a design that tries to fix all the problems this caused could be a massive mistake.

I can't see them changing the internal hardware notably. Too many developers and consumers would be alienated. Not impossible that they may do a DSi style mhz boost to improve frame rates mind(Solatorobo and Sonic collection both have smoother frame rates on DSi's I believe).

There are improvements on 3D screen tech to be had, including ones that are ghosting free and have a 30degree viewing angle rather than the ~10degree one of the current screen.

Dual analogues should've been in the console from the start. I'm still wondering how they expect lefties to play Kid Ikarus (they said there's going to be a lefty control scheme but I can't see how they'd do it).

Incidentally, would it be worth splitting off this 3DS redesign talk into a new thread? I'm sure the server would breathe a sigh of relief not having a popular 500page thread grow to 1000.

Pulling back on the one USP of the machine while seemingly half-assedly trying to create a pseudo-second stick? When I picture Nintendo HQ, I just picture the Smurfs running around their village in a panic.

That French article is a bit gloomy in the end. I hadn't realised previously, but it says Iwata has stated Nintendo will now accept games with no 3D features whatsoever. That article was basically just a long list of negatives (and genuine ones at that) which really do make the possible demise of 3DS look startlingly feasible. It does go on to say don't underestimate the power of Pokemon, but surely it would take something truly epic on that front to significantly improve the console's chances? Hmm.

The tack-on right stick is ridiculous though. A plain admission that they frigged up the design, basically.

                      /sigh.

I have really held out for my day 1 purchase and have not yet felt let down, even though many have been unhappy. But this really makes me feel let down by ninty. Adding a 2nd stick now is a terrible idea, I also have no idea how this would work for original owners as an add-on.

Just stick with the original idea and get out more content...

Tone down the 3D capabilities, is that not what the 3D slider is for? :/

To be fair, they did say around the time that the 3DS was announced that no Nintendo games would require the 3D mode as part of the gameplay and that they were advising devs not to require it as well.

Wonder what rumours like this do to the 3DS sales? They certainly won't help them, but how much damage could they afflict?. I certainly won't buy a 3DS until I get confirmation about the possible redesign.

Absolutely, but now they seem to be saying no 3D at all is fine, which seems mad to me. How they can think that's really a good idea I don't know. In the eyes of dubious parents/undecided punters that would make 3DS games basically look like slightly tarted up regular DS games on a new console. Certainly not the way forward to persuade people to pick it up. If the source for that article is genuine, then Nintendo has made a total balls of this and is in a flap, and the machine could well go the way of the Virtual Boy. I hope not and I really didn't believe that would happen before, but now I'm not so sure.

This leak will do pretty heavy damage to Nintendo. The 3DS is enjoying a much needed sales surge after the price cut, this news/rumour will just encourage people to wait.

The problem Nintendo have is that their line on rumours is always a "we do not comment on rumours and speculation" response, regardless of validity. However this is too damaging to 3DS sales not to shoot it down or take some other action if it's true.

A NeoGAF poster however made a rather interesting point: Kid Ikarus, RE:R and MGS3 are all titles that would benefit incredibly from a second analogue stick and they're all 2012 titles. In KI and MGS3 they were both pushed back, despite apparently being pretty far in development.
