I don't think Bioshock really had any plot to talk of, the setting was everything and that combined with some decent gameplay was more than enough to carry the game for me.
Half Life is the game that so often gets talked about when it comes to narrative but again there was nothing really worthy of mention. Where it did really stand out was in the methods that it used to tell what was essentially a pretty ineffectual story as at the time it was a new way of doing things.
The worst offenders in this type of game are the Modern Warfare games which really are offensively bad.
The only sort of plot I really need in games like these is an arrow pointing me towards the next room/field/submarine/planet and finding somebody there shooting at me so that I know who's idiot face to stab off.
I'd even say that the Modern Warfare games would benefit somewhat from completely removing the stories which I presume have been discovered in the back of one of the developer's primary school homework books.
I really don't benefit from sitting through a ten minute narrative cutscene in these types of games any more than I would benefit from reading about shooting Russian's arms off for eight hours while part way through chapter six of Finnegans Wake.
