It is a shame more people arent aware of the Wii U - mostly because there is such fun to be had, esp with titles like NintendoLand. Also, ZombiU truly is the most intense, at times, most terrifying survivor horror i've ever played for a very long time, bettered by the fantastic use of the gamepad. Also Miiverse - and how it is used within titles to share experiences - is simply brilliant... So yes, it is a shame -
Nintendo's biggest failing currently is their marketing... People simply don't know it's a new console. But, personally, i'm not worried about sales. I think as soon as Nintendo get their big hitters out, word will spread and slowly but surely people will understand Wii U isn't only a new controller, but something else entirely.
And Borris! I HATE YOU. That wasn't funny :-p *love you really*

I agree with Adam, they didn't learn from the DS/3DS debacle. Basically marketing ballsed up. If it was called just "Nintendo" or whatever just not Wii it would be known as a new system. It's not like its hard to put a Wiimote in a new box in case they were worried about confusing people that existing stuff worked, basically a note in a new console box telling people they did and new packaging for existing wii products for new adopters easy. It's not like the Wii brand was known for its ultra high quality (I don't mean it had **** games it had its fair share of both) but recalling it Wii is pointless with the people it was trying to "interest" are the exact customer that will think that the Wii-U is the same thing they already have ie an original wiiLast edited by ETC; 09-02-2013, 21:33.

I also think it is because they focused so much on the gamepad itself.
For instance, the first reveal they didn't showcase the system, they said iit was merely ''a box'', and then focused EVERYTHING on the controller.
I understand why they did that - and i agree with their mentality, however the general public aren't so easily educated. Things need to be explained black and white. They should have never taken the focus away from the console itself, instead they should have focused how the gamepad is totally unique and accentuates the consoles capabilities. It's a very sad marketing truth, but to have a message understood by the masses you need to imagine you are explaining something to a toddler, and then take it from there. Nintendo obviously gave the wider audience more credit - and it back fired: That's me with my business hat on.
Taking that hat off, i 100% agree with their original stance, and i don't believe the power of 'the box' is fundamentally important to a gaming experience, to 'fun' - it is simply a means to an end, but it is fundamental to that end - and Nintendo lost sight of those fundamentals and it created a confused picture. Confusion leads to doubt and uncertainty, which leads to lack of interest and they are the very last things you need when launching a new console.
Nintendo's marketing was wrong from the start. But again, i'm not worried. It was wrong for the 3DS too, yet Nintendo, quite admirably, are often keen to rectify those mistakes and I believe they will.

I just can't fault their business sense at all, it was sheer brilliance from that point of view, especially when you consider just the profits from the Wii consoles sold have paid for the wiiU development and launch, along with the console after that too, they probably still had change to spare adter all that too.
