For people nay-saying Nintendo putting their back cat on iOS, saying there's no point to the 3DS then, here's why that would not be the case-

It's a totally separate & thus far untapped market.

Keep the current gen games (Wii U, 3DS) exclusive to those systems.
But port all notable Nintendo games from Nes to at least N64/possibly GC onto iOS.
This would make the company money, lots of money.
Nintendo being the genius' that they are, I'm sure they could make Mario work well on touchscreen.
It's not like good gameplay can't be implemented on a touchscreen.
I know they are totally different, but Sonic CD plays like a dream on iOS.

Would anyone pay $4.99 for a NES game on iOS?

When playing old school games that were designed for precise digital input, you're never going to get the same degree of control with current display technology. Maybe some kind of sophisticated tactile feedback in the future will resolve this, but at the moment those on-screen d-pads work, but are basically much worse than a physical d-pad.

It's a bit of a stretch to say that the mobile games market is 'totally separate' to the handheld games market. That's clearly not the case, since they both fill the exact same need for consumers. Nintendo would be cannibalising their own sales. Most parents in particular would say 'Well, why do you need a 3DS? You've already got Mario on the family iPad'.

Not to mention the damage they would do to their core brands. The Mario and Zelda brands are much, much more valuable and important than the Wii and DS brands. The latter brands are transitory, they can get rid of those like they did with the NES/SNES line and the Gameboy line. Mario and Zelda are what will carry them into the future.

Yes releasing Super Mario World on iPhone would make them lots of cash in the short term, but they don't need it. As has been repeated over and over, they've got plenty in the bank. What they need is a sustainable strategy going forward, and rinsing their back catalogue on iOS and eroding their brand with SNES games with crap controls ain't it.

              Fair points.
I just wonder if Wii U is salvageable at this point.

Ever resilient, Nintendo's share price has quickly started to recover following the fallout from WiiU

If Nintendo ditched Wii-U early they burn the loyalists who bought it, Sega never recovered after doing that to their fans.

Is not the point that Nintendo needs a new fan base to survive? (Like those they found with Wii?) The core fans just don't buy enough for them to generate enough income, and it's either go casual or deploy a system that multiplat publishers will support. I suppose Wii U still has a few years left in it, so this isn't a short term choice, but if Mario Kart doesn't kick start things Nintendo will have to do something...

Even if Mario Kart could, Ninty would have to step the hype machine up. There's none and it's their next big game. We see more of Smash Bros than MK8

To be fair SEGA didn't do that .

Mario Kart isn't going to make any real difference as a main games machine for the mass mass market and the in the eyes of retail and 3rd parties then its over the Wii U already...we all know it and can see it . Nintendo will just have to lose face (like SONY with the VITA) and see this one out not doubt they'll both still sell millions and make money off the systems inthe end . Its more a question of what Ninetdno does in 5 years time and the next battle for the consoles

Also this talk of NCL going to i-pad is silly imo Hand held gaming isn't a issues at all for Nintendo, but their strong card and area when they published and produced a high number of amazing titles each year , its the console division that's the issues imo.

Both the 32X and Saturn were dumped quickly and it hurt Sega's chances with the DC.

32X was a bit, but NCL dropped the N64 DD far sooner and didn't give anywhere near the support to that system to what SEGA did with 32X in terms of Software and the less said about the Virtual Boy the better . Saturn was supported for over 4 years no different to how much MS supported the XBox

I think dropping the 64DD and the Virtual Boy is a bit different to dropping the WiiU. We may as well bring Satellaview into the discussion as well.

To be Fair NCL did support the Satellaview for a few years, but would agree to drop an add-on isn't that big of a deal . I doubt NCL will drop the Wii but it's quite clear its doomed to be nothing more than a distance 3rd best system , more so if Ubisoft drop the system too.

Nintendo needs to spend the cash to add at least 1 new In-House studio , really start to invest on-line , let some of its teams make something new and go for it this gen on the Wi U and maybe get rid of some of the older heads that running the company (The ones that are so out of touch with the market and general gamer) In short just go wild , write off this gen (Wii U) and start to get into shape, In readiness for the next console battle, because its clearly lost this one.
