The PS1 laid the groundwork but it was still a bedroom machine (albeit a bedroom with spunk on the sheets rather than crayon on the walls like with the NES/SNES/N64) the rampant piracy and chipping is also a cloud over the PS1. With it's DVD player the PS2 became a fully-fledged living room machine hence the "legitimisation" claim.

Ease of piracy only assists the sale of consoles.

You want to pretend there wasn't rampant piracy on the PS2 too?

I don't think Sony created the 'mainstream older gamer' market. To a certain extent it would have happened anyway as the kids who played Atari 2600, Amiga, NES and beyond grew up but kept gaming - and had kids of their own.

The PlayStation2's inclusion of DVD playback and more 'grown up' aesthetic was prescient and tapped into that burgeoning market, while managing to appeal to kids at the same time.

I think it also had a big influence on Nintendo. After all, they chose to create a fun little purple box with a handle and a controller that looked like a Bop-It! to differentiate themselves as the 'fun' brand against Sony's trendy dad console.

Not at all but it wasn't as widespread or defining with the PS2. Everyone I knew who had a chipped PS1 bought games at car boot sales on a Sunday but the companies/authorities seemed to get wise and clamp down on it in the PS2-era, look at the Wii, it's the weakest console in history in terms of hacking for piracy but outside of online communities like this few people (in relation to the install base which was PS2-size) bothered.

Oh yeah for sure but they were the console the developers making the more grown-up games (Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Gran Truismo, COD/Medal of Honour etc) jumped on. Or should I say had success on, but for the grace of god there goes Sega and the Saturn.

The issue isn't that people don't know what the Wii U is, it's more that they don't care.

Nintendo should go third party with Sony. Swallow their pride and make billions.

Going fully mobile would be the more sensible option.

They should go back to hanafuda cards.

Hell, I'd like Game & Watch to make a comeback!

                        What makes you say that?

They won't get in bed with Sony, it's a stupid Japanese pride thing, they'd just do something silly like enter a partnership where Xbox Consoles are Nintendo branded in Japan or they'd sell "Game & Watch" controllers that work with iOS/Android devices.

Because that's the platform with the larger and insanely more profitable userbase.

The PS4 isn't selling all that well in Japan either.

Indeed but the PS4 has pretty much outsold the GC, Wii U and isn't far behind the N64.

But you're probably right. A Nintendo tablet with actual buttons could be a goer.
