Because people are just ignoring what is in front of them based on their own preferences. Resident evil 4 contains many of the staples of the series. Controls, levels structure, items, maps, puzzles, atmosphere, cheesy horror. So much of it is there. It just has a different view so therefore has to alter, no, improve the mechanics to make it suitable.

It's evolution. It's what happens to franchises, Metroid Prime is a key example of this. Contains all of the series staples yet plays differently due to the view. It's still fundamentally a Metroid title.

I adore fixed camera pre rendered games, I actively hunt them out to play.

Resident Evil 5 is different. It lost atmosphere and added game changing and somewhat breaking co op element. Alone it's too frustrating and with a friend it loses everything because it's set in the day mostly and playing with a friend isn't scary.

Now you're just trolling me. Are we forgetting that the original had soldiers, shotguns, machine guns, bazookas, flame throwers and more? Everything in 2 was laid down in the original bar some details. Hunters, Tyrants, it was all there. Just more of it in 2. I'm in it right now and the only recognisable difference from an action point of view is that there are a few corridors with more zombies, making it preferable to clear them out rather than leave them. That alone doesn't change the series from whatever you think RE1 is into an action game. Control, system, weapons, enemies, all pretty much the same. And it's just as tense too.

The first game was much more intense and suspenseful that the second, Capcom really turned it up to 10. They do feel remarkably different. The first is also much more difficult. Two is a lightweight outright action game.

Well we clearly disagree on that. They feel pretty much exactly the same to me. It's no bad thing at all (RE2 has plenty of suspense too) but I'm not seeing whatever differences you are. I have played the first many, many times. The second not quite as much but I have a nice clear comparison playing it right now. It's more of the same in every way - just bigger and better.

I'll agree with all your points bar the frustration bit. It's butter to play, once you master it. More fun than Resi 4 tbh, easier to aim, slicker, it's a great FUN game...but it's about as scary as a bar of soap. Well, the opening bit with all them scary-eyed African dudes standing about is pretty unsettling. That works.

Have you finished it on the hardest level alone?

I can't remember mate...probably a couple of years now but probably not the hardest, I must confess.

Did play through the HD remake of Resi 4 last year and was sad to find one of my fave games of all seemed a bit...brown, now.

But one must remember, it was 2004/5 when it came out, well ahead of the game back then and it stunned me proper.

But I found the Krauser QTE bit much easier, for some reason. I seem to be pretty good at QTEs in my old age!

                      Resi 1 = Big Daddy

                      Resi 2 = Giant Haystacks

                      Resi 3 = Fit Finlay

                      Resi 4 = Kendo Nagasaki

It's considered broken on the hardest because of the AI. Fine in Co op.

I can understand why people like Resi 4, i appreciate some of the individual elements of the game and why Capcom, under threat of the series becoming a very stale copy and paste, changed it so much.

My main problem is that i went into Resi 4 after playing 1, 2, 3 & CV and my expectations were totally different to the finished product. Had Resi 4 been the first game I played in the franchise i would have probably enjoyed it a lot more. As it is though it's just too much of a departure from the originals.

Sometimes i get the feeling as if the only reason it bares the Resident Evil title is because of its a recognised brand and it equates to sales, they could easily change the game title, leon character model and a few ingame story files and it would be unrecognisable as a Resi game and could have easily been a new IP.

Like I've said, I haven't played RE4 so can't comment on it. I LOVED Code Veronica - at least that's what my faulty memory tells me. But I do remember feeling there had been a touch too much repetition in the series by that point. Zero went and added to that (was that before or after 4?). Anyway, whatever about 4 itself I think it was definitely time for a change.

I thought Code Veronica was rubbish. Ugly, clunky, frustrating and dull locations. Only Wesker saves it.
