Sure, OK, SMK is out on its own in that regard. It stands for every other game.

With the exception of SMK, Mario Kart as a series has gameplay marked by a blend of driving skill and weapons strategy. And while the entries are variable in quality, I love that gameplay personally

      Lawl! I guess so!

Funnily enough, Time Trial was one of the few things that MK64 absolutely nailed IMO. You could argue that Time Trialling is its main strength.

Shame they're selling MK8 short in a way by classing it as their 3rd best selling game. Wii Sports should never, ever be classed as a sold game

          Most widely distributed demo.

Nintendo have always done this with pack-ins though, and they're not the only ones - it's industry standard practice.

You might as well not class SMB or GB Tetris as a sold game by that logic, and that would be ridiculous.

Sports is almost a breed apart though, it had no sales record as a standalone product. It was like Christmas Nights or Chu Chu Rocket except every Wii owner was forced to have it even if they didn't want it. They shifted a lot but it's not a real accomplishment compared to the games below it

Wii Sports was sold separately and it became a Nintendo Selects title so it must have done well sales-wise.

It was also critically lauded as a proof-of-concept enough to the point that Nintendo tried to chase similar buzzes with sequels like Spors Resort and Sports Club, as well as trying similar proof-of-concept titles like Nintendoland and 1-2-Switch, albeit with seemingly less success.

The way it welcomes players of all skills to play together is what made MK8 a winner in our house. I like the 'never over 'til it's over' factor ... though skill will generally tip the balance over 4 races.

Wii Sports is kind of a unique title. Yeah, it was never sold separately, but it was also directly responsible for a lot of the sales of the Wii in general. For a good percentage of Wii buyers, the Wii pretty much WAS Wii Sports.

It wasn't like it was just some bundled game everyone was forced to have but ignored. It was probably (and I have no basis for saying this other than instinct) more directly responsible for console sales than any pack-in in history.

EDIT: OK just seen Nu-Eclipse has said it was sold separately. I didn't realise that. I thought it was packed in with every machine sold.

If Sports was sold seperately then fair enough, for some reason I don't remember it being sold seperately
Never understood the appeal either, it made it clear the wiimotes worked but was a glorfied demo that got old fast. Not that that was a rare experience on the Wii. Only the PS2 had more shovelware on it

If you exclude pack-in games from those then I think it would affect many games we consider very successful - Halo, Sonic 1, Tetris as @Nu-Eclipse says. WiiSports was a videogame; content-wise and feature-wise there's as much to it as something like Virtua Tennis. It might be simple but so was Pong. If Nintendo want to count it in their list of games, I find it hard to dispute.

I feel like the difference is that some pack-in games are system sellers. While Wii Sports was fantastic at showing what the system could do and was a lot of fun, I would be less convinced that it was in itself the driver behind the sales of a Wii bundle. Whereas Halo may well have been the driving force of many XBox bundles. But the problem regardless is that it's hard to consider any of those sales in a "best-selling" capacity unless you are only counting the separate sales because we'll never know how many copies were "sold" versus those that essentially were given away, if you know what I mean.

Also I missed the discussion but Mario Kart 7 is superb and I still go back to it because I love a lot of the tracks that weren't included in 8.

I still feel Nintendo dropped the ball here. I know Deluxe was meant to be the all-in, fully-featured version of 8 - but I would happily pay £25 for another bunch of tracks.

Then again they're weird with this. I mean, Super Mario Party - I expected them to release more boards/content as paid DLC for that and we got nothing.

Yep, I think a lot of us would have paid for more tracks had they been made available.

They dropped the ball by not making and then releasing Mario Kart 9 on the Switch, like they should've done in the first bloody place.
