If the above is true then I suspect it's less people buying for £59.99 or £69.99 but instead just not buying at all unless it's a specific tentpole

Yeah probably those waiting for the price drop. I know a lot of you still buy and trade discs to recoup costs which is still a viable option but I think there's now a fair amount of digital purchasers who are prepared to wait months for a real saving (or setup a Turkish account and screw the system).
£70 is certainly a barrier for many...

We’re also coming out of an era of unprecedented free time and money where people were off during lockdown, I would bet most those people are now back to work full time and just aren’t playing games as they don’t have time, or probably the money anymore due to cost of living rising. So that could be playing a part in that data as well.Last edited by fishbowlhead; 30-04-2023, 18:15.

Which is fine for some games that you know you're going to get to get your money’s worth from, obviously not for indies etc. However, I’ve found the game prices pretty sensible this gen, you only have to wait a year and prices drop massively once the launch hype dies down.
Case in point: Mass Effect Collection has been £60 since it came out on PC & PS5 but **** that. Just purchased on PS5 today for £14.99.
There's no question I would buy more games if they were £40, or remember when Sainsbury's made all new chart games £30 back in the day? I do! So games being £70 just means we all spend less on all game, but I bet the Publishers have done the numbers and think they can get away with it.
That's fine with me and I'm sure most of us older buggers who just don't have the time anymore, we just buy less in the sales, long after they've flopped!

Fewer sales but increased revenue on the whole as their last quarter was another record for Sony. In fact their last quarter was equivalent to Nintendos total year revenue last year, so not quite the doom that the mentioned “annalist” is trying to make out.Last edited by fishbowlhead; 01-05-2023, 08:39.

I don't have enough hours in the day to play everything anyway so jumping in day one doesn't really make much sense...

The trouble with them relying on the increased revenue will be that a lot will come from greater digital sales and MTX etc but if third parties are seeing lower base game sales it'll lead to erosion in the market with more companies folding or leaving. I imagine it's much like how Nintendo does well but many third parties don't on their platforms leading to many games not releasing on their systems. If that was the case on all three formats then things will get terminal for many companies quickly which is bad for Sony etc in the long run. The market suffers too much from Blockbuster syndrome, spiralling budgets and a lack of AA's to generate new affordable franchises.

Paying £50+ for something that is guaranteed to break in under year still gets under my skin, and it always the ****ing analogue sticks drifting.

I'll have to look in to getting some tools (rubber ended tweezers, grease) to and see if taking it apart, cleaning the connections and re greasing fixes it.
