Yep same. Then it set on fire. Still, my Mortal Kombat movie soundtrack CD sounded great on it!

I think it was something along the lines of RGB not carrying the macrovision signal so they blocked it.

I have a pal that absolutely swears this is the case, he still has it set up to a silly expensive sound system and it looks so out of place.

It's probably not so much the case these days.
But I believe when Sony made it, they just stuck in a sound chip from their HIFi systems because they had them around.

It’s nonsense. I remember testing the same CDs in all my disc based systems years ago hooked up to a Musical Fidelity amp and Quad Speakers. The Musical Fidelity CD used for reference player dumped on all the consoles from a great height. The Mega-CD was the worst sounding with the GreyStation next in line. The 3DO however did sound surprisingly good as did the Duo-R.

Having a Duo-R hooked up to your amp and speakers purely for CD playback would be a definite vibe.

              Did you test any others?

I had a Duo-R, OG Mega-CD, 3DO, mk2 Saturn and the GreyStation at the time. I couldn’t recommend any of them over a dedicated player for CD playback. Even the 32kHz PCM tunes from Sonic CD sounded every bit as good as the red book tracks. The 3DOs visualiser is good fun though.
Doing that testing years ago is why I have a cheaper amplifier and speaker setup for my retro gaming room these days it just isn’t worth spending more.
l’d like to be able hook up my MegaSG and SuperNT to my Phantoms to hear it but would need some kind of HDMI to optical breakout box and there’s too much latency to make them much use for gaming anyway.

Audio latency is honestly something I’ve overlooked with my little external DAC and headphone amp combo I have here for my MiSTer. What’s the best way to test? Just tap a button on an overly familiar game and then play it literally by ear?

I suppose I could record at 120fps and overlay the results in Premiere Pro.

The latency in my setup is caused by the processing in the active speakers I use. Like yourself I use a DAC with my MiSTer and it doesn’t seem to introduce any audio latency.

I bet you’re not using a €15 jobber from AliExpress though.

That’s posh! Mine was £7.99 from eBay. I am intending to upgrade now I’ve seen how well it works. And I had to get a replacement I/O board for the MiSTer as the optical output on my original board didn’t work.

I wish they’d revise the I/O with a more capable onboard DAC, so basic headphones/speakers could go right into the 3.5 and work well enough. The existing one is a load of pish, and not up to any task at all. At least the jack outputs optical for these work-arounds..

As it continues its battle with the FTC, Microsoft argues it's case by stating that it believes Sony will release the PlayStation 5 Slim at the end of 2023

A new development in Microsoft's legal battle with the Federal Trade Commission reveals that an all-new version of the PlayStation 5 may be imminent.

Is it a scoop if you're regurgitating info from Microsoft's FTC case?

If true it should weigh in at a light and affordable £800+ if you want to see any meaningful performance improvement on those sexy cross gen games they're winding up
