I've seen some talk online about the removal of Emulation on Xbox. Now I don't tend to give much weight to online chat and rumours, but the theory going around is that Xbox recently struck a deal with Nintendo about COD. Nintendo are notorious in their dislike of Emulation and it's possible that Nintendo asked Xbox to remove this feature, probably not as an ultimatum, but more a comment that they didn't like it and Xbox felt obliged to get rid.
I think the timing of this works, if this is true, it'd take some weeks to develop a bit of code to disable this feature. Who knows.

Its real shame though because the SeriesS as an emulator box was super compelling.

      The first reply is important.

I was using retail mode RetroArch and others because it was nice not having to reboot into dev mode each time.

Turns out I was hardly playing emulators that much, so I was considering going back to using dev mode anyway after weighing up the retail mode downsides: the hassle of managing free space(and needing to use a USB stick for the most part); popping into the discord for emulator updates; each update being a brand new app with its own folder; disabling the share button to avoid accidentally uploading copyrighted stuff; and so on.

I think the main complaints and reason for the shutdown in retail mode is all these apps were unsigned code, loaded via a 3rd party site (e.g. side loaded). That absolutely breaks the terms for retail mode... so if anyone took issue with the functionality of the apps Microsoft doesn't have an option to keep them accessible.

Dev mode by nature is used to run unsigned code and has all those extra precautions to keep it a walled garden.

The best outcome we could potentially see is those developers get the apps officially launched on Xbox so they're available directly from the Xbox store in retail mode. Looking at Dolphin currently launching "officially" in Steam it's very possible that creators will find a way to comply with the rules and Nintendo or any other firm won't be able to do anything about it.

That would be good because at the moment setting goals is pretty useless if you're saving up for something big...

Would be great if the larger gift cards were discounted as well as an incentive.

I'll believe it when I see it though as most of the changes recently have removed the ability to accrue, though I still seem to be able to get £20pm pretty easily.

One of the more interesting Series S videos. Is it a trojan horse spec to later be able to hit a handheld device target?

Certainly a lot of what he says makes sense and it's within the realms of possibility.

I think the things he doesn't cover are the larger issues.

Firstly cost... Valve have been fairly successful thanks to being able to hit a price where they're losing on the hardware but recouping revenue through software. You'd assume Xbox would have to do the same.

Then competition. The handheld space is very difficult and now besides the Switch existing so does the Steam Deck. If Valve have already beaten you the the punch does it even make sense to build your own, with all the business risk associated.

Then you've also got to perhaps consider OS abd features. Is it literally going to be just an Xbox and use that front end, or can we dual boot it with Windows or SteamOS and essentially be more widely usable as a PC?

Anyway... thought it was an interesting analysis that raises more questions than it answers, but certainly it's a possibility.

100%... not the case is my stance. The risks are way too high and returns too unlikely, even the Deck isn't that successful a product in the grand picture.

Argentina and Turkey are said to now be limited to 13 month GPU top ups effectively killing the $1 trick there, I'm expecting that to be rolled out everywhere soon too

Yeah that's crap, delay it a month or two...

I expect better from Arcane, especially when Deathloop came out the door finished and technically accomplished with performance & quality setting from the off.

Xbox seems a bit cursed at the moment. I suspect they would delay it normally, but they know they need to get stuff out the door. But between Halo and this it's painting a picture that MS are struggling with QC right now.

At least progression counts for all co-op players.
