Hopefully it will pipe up when Starfield comes. Not really sold on Redfall, but will to give it a good go. Outside of them I'm struggling to think of what else. Elder Scrolls I guess, but that's way off, right?

I didn't watch the podcast so I don't know the logic that was used to back the underperformance claims. I will say, though, that the metrics by which Microsoft judged the success of Hi-Fi Rush -- and even of the decision to release it by surprise -- were surely completely different than the ones by which publishers and developers judge more conventional releases, i.e., units sold.
Hi-Fi Rush was well received, reviewed well and garnered a lot of positive buzz. A month after its release, Bethesda tweeted it had been played by two million players which seems like a pretty decent number for a rhythm-based game.

From Grubbs later comments he's not really basing it on much evidence, more a passing comment...
We all know game pass cannablises retail sales, and here Hi-fi Rush was a game launched digitally only onto the service with zero marketing. Judging by Steam sales it did ok for a short run but it's a bit of a marmite title (I enjoyed it but still haven't finished it) and one that was obviously not AAA.
So I just think people are blowing this up for no reason really. Microsoft were probably happy enough with the active users on game pass after it launched and not really concerned about revenue per se... but then as Grubb stated later, he doesn't know how Microsoft is measuring success here.

I actually don't mind him. He's usually pretty objective and all of these pundits like dropping the odd comment in to be a little edgy and drive hits. The problem is how quickly the fanboys on Twitter run with it and blow it out of proportion.
Here, you listen to it and it's fairly throw away as a comment and they're on to the next thing... but by then it's out in the wild and everyone is running with it.

Given the theory that Denuvo is useful because most sales take place upfront, I wonder if MS needs to step back from Day and Date GP releases.

They aren't really advertising though... they seem to have decided not to market anything until after the ABK deal decision so I'd imagine they will start to push that (if it goes through) and other game releases for the second half of the year... That should improve hardware seem through.
The CMA stuff should come out today right?

This will be the third console generation were Xbox sales comes in last place. They can push GP all they want but without console sales there is a low ceiling for uptake. I own a PC and don't have GP, and many PC gamers don't, so that's not a guaranteed revenue. Console on the other hand means you are locked into the Xbox eco system. MS need to really have a close look at what's going on, because they are about to spend billions on a gamble essentially.

They need to sort out the PC experience as the Xbox app on PC is terrible.
I don't think it's a massive gamble to be honest. There is nothing here that can't be reversed, but I do think PC is as important to the uptake as consoles if not more.
You obviously don't need to use game pass on PC but they do need to support it with quality releases and also make sure those same titles are available on the other PC stores as well. That ensures PC game pass is the best it can be but also not the only viable option on PC to make a sale.
I also really think MS needs to support handheld OS in Windows for Steam Deck and all of the other competitors coming out now. Valve has done this with Steam big picture mode replicating the SteamOS UI so really all it would take it perhaps doing similar for the Xbox app in a re-launch with the Xbox dashboard UI (which is about to get an upgrade anyway).

Like I said on the PC thread, there as so many places to get games on PC for cheap (or if you sail the high seas) that GP kind of fades in to the background. Back compat is near pointless with good emulators too. I'll likely get a month of GP when forza comes out, just to give it a bash for cheap, but I won't stick around. I'll probably get Starfield either in a sale from elsewhere or where ever is cheapest at launch.
PC gamers are a slippery beast because of all the options available. GP needs to refresh itself as THE best place to get games on PC, but Steam kind of got there first.

I think sales being down is due to a lack of compelling software, they put a lot of faith in games like Atomic Heart for day one gamepass exclusives and keep getting burned. For 2023 their promoting Redfall, Starfeild, and Exoprimal as their big hiters, i hate to say it but it really dose look like out of those three the only one that's really gonna gain a massive amount of traction is Starfeild. Bethesda need this to be good too, as their reputation has taken quite a hit of late Skyrim seems a long time ago and things like the mess that was Fallout 76 are what they have put out recently so who knows what state starfeild will come out in.
