the flying babies really spook me out and the berzerk is amazing. I just escaped from Hell where it started to get really tough.

Thats the exact bit I am at too Neil!

Spoiler - How did you find the boss just before you escaped from hell?

the guardian was hard, took me a lot of replays to finally nail him because I initially didn't see the extra health and ammo lying around.

Dark room, headphones on loud... that's one of the most disconcerting things I've heard in a long time...
yeah the sound effects on this part are +very+ off putting It freaked the wife out completely

Its far more detailed but the more I play this the more I can't help thinking that the graphics have an almost Chronicles of Riddick quality about them. They have that same.... sheen. Is it the bump mapping I'm noticing?

I'd like to know the answer to this as well....

FFS. It freaked my 25 year old mate out. And he kills pigs for a living.

I have no idea at all why people keep banging on about the weakness of the story. I swear to god that it was never an issue around Doom/Doom 2. Lets face it, you play a single Marine, who from the beginning of the story was little more than a tagger-along. I'm glad it doesn't have a story... but then again, I'm one of those people who don't like story in their games anyway, so I'm biased.

I'm genuinely not sure about what you mean here. I'm assuming you're talking about HL-esque set pieces. You're probably right, but seeming lack of tactics in the enemy seems quite right, which ties in with...

You're fighting hellspawned demons, and the undead. What were you expecting. It's really really nice to play a game for once where the enemy don't arse about and try to hide. Doom's tension stems from the unknown and what's up ahead, not sitting still for 20 minutes holding your breath waiting for an enemy to look the other way.

I know you're just expressing you (entirely valid) opinions, and I know there's nothing I can say to change your mind, but I love the game to bits, and it feels like a breath of fresh air, so I want to stick up for it...

Personally i think the event scripting on item pick up (albiet a bit of a twat) is quite cleverly done by iD. Makes the games a lot harder

As for AI, well, theres so many enemies at one given time, i have to question if it needs AI. Personally, i would of said no, seeing as most enemies just charge straight at you. And thats the way the game is meant to be

I wouldnt say its as good as everyone keeps banging on about though

Yeah I had to do it twice, first time I used loads of rockets and that didn't work to well. The second time I used the chain gun and I mauled him in no time at all.

I have seen more people saying the game is bad than good although that might just be the places I visit on the web. I would say its better than everyone has been saying.

I just played through something that made me smile and think "that was a nice little touch"

Was just doing level 3 or 4, Administration. Got to a locked storage cupboard without the code so I read the pda I found nearby... no luck but there was an email about how he'd one the storage cupboard online at https://<span style="color:White">ww...dy.com </span> . So I checked out the site for real, and lo' and behold it had the code to the cupboard on it. Even better was that it had a chaingun inside!!

jezz - more to come on that later mate

I think alot of people expected more from Doom than it was ever going to bring. Doom is about lots of enemys coming at you and you running to the door to escape alive. Its not about solving puzzles or playing with your gonads under a microscope, its about volumes of enemys coming at you and balancing your ammo and health to reach the next exit. If you are playing this on the easy levels then you are missing out big time. It does have a story, not an amazing one but its good enough for Doom.

I couldn't be more happier with Doom, it does exactly what it says on the tin.

                            Regards,
                            Neil.

I think the story is perfect. It sets the background scene, and then doesn't get in the way of me shooting zombies, and Things That Should Not Be?.

At the moment I only have my TV to use as a monitor and it either does 800x600 (max normal) or 1280x720 (max widescreen).
Looked around and found this mate:

Doesn't appear to support widescreen natively but with a little tinkering all seems cool
