You must remember that neither the 360 or XBMC is doing any fancy processing to the image. It's just deinterlacing it (and rescalling it, in the case of XBMC) and outputting. Any difference between the two are going to be caused by the quality of the video decoder (both of which are software-based).

The Oppo will look better. But it doesn't magically turn DVD's into HD-DVD's or aything like that... it just looks a bit better. Depends how much DVD playback means to you.

Remember, the quality on those DVDs is extremely poor. Try something else to compare dude.

Yeah I think things which have been remastered are best avoided for trying out your new tv. As pictured a few pages back the rerelease of Top Gun looks pretty shocking even after it's "digital remastering" with the main problem being excesive noise.

Hire yourself a copy of The Wedding Crashers. Watched that @ 720P on my LCD last night and it looked stunning, a really good transfer if you ask me !

Not really watching it to test out my TV though. Just thought it would look a bit better at 1080i. Still, tis not too bad.

Try Star wars revenge of the sith, it was filmed purely on digital cameras and is hasn't had to be transfered from film resulting in a very high quality picture.

It should look better in 720p unless your lucky enough to own a 1920x1080 TV.

Yeah must try that, can't believe I've not got that disk as yet

Re the 720P / 1080i thing : I have been wondering this myself, obviously 720P is far nearer the native resolution of my screen than 1080i, but is DVD not an interlaced format, and therefore will it not look better in 1080i. I really have no idea

It should be significantly worse to have the DVD Player upscale the 480i/576i image up to 1080i, for the TV to just have to deinterlace it and rescale it back down to it's native resolution.

It's going to have to be deinterlaced either way as LCD's are Progressive, better leaving that job to the player.

ah OK, understood ! Mine's on 720P was just not sure if it should be on 1080i ! Leave it well alone now

Re Starwars : What do folks think of the Episode 1 transfer, was not very pleased with that, even when upscalled. IIRC he used digital camera's for 2 and 3 only, so I guess 1 could have a poorer image quality !

Right, I'm getting paid tomorrow and I'm just gonna go for it and buy the Oppo. Wheres the best place to buy? And I should go for DVI cable just for easiness to leave the HDMI free for PS3?

I would stick to DVI because of my aforementioned issue. It's very likely because I'm using a cheap HDMI cable, bet better safe than sorry.

Cool okay, should I go with IT Supplies for ?171 or go with Oppo site for ?145? Suppose I could get done by customs and will take longer and if theres a problem with it would be more difficult to return so the extra ?25 is worth it really for the peace of mind and less hassle.

Next day delivery too with IT Supplies so I order tomorrow and I'll have this bad boy by Thursday.

It will come with latest firmware and the newer remote control too yes?

Just regarding a test DVD, try The Incredibles, Finding Nemo or another Disney animated movie. These 2 are the best though.

I was not charged customs when ordering from the Oppo site

It will come with the newer remote released last November (and what an improvement it is!), and also the newest firmware (though flashing it yourself is simple enough).
