People are probably sick of me saying this at every opportunity, but screw Component for DVD's, go 720p/1080i upscaling DVI/HDMI based DVD Players.

and for all of you who might not know, if you have one of the newer PS2's (the ones without the Ilink on the front, silver ones and slimline) you can enable 480p dvd playback in the menu if you are using a component cable shame the Ps2 is so ****e at DVD's though :P

              Hi guys,

I have just recieved my Samsung 26" LCD (built in freeview model) and have set everything up. I have the standard TV and freeview working (picture is not brilliant but I expected that from SD signals).

I have my PAL PS2 connected via RGB SCART and it looks really awful. I have one of the new silver PS2s...I think component is my best bet is it not? Where is the best place to get the right component cables from?

Can't wait to get hold of my Xbox360 though as that was the main reason I went for a HDTV anyway! Roll on December 2nd!

You have to set the ps2 to 16:9, then I think you have to start playing a DVD, then fully stop it, so it can't be resumed, then under the 'select@ menu there is an option for progressive scan

I just bought some cheapy cables from playasia for ?6, they seem to do the job, although the quality seems to very between games alot. God of war looked like butt through 480p, but tekken 5 looked crisper than a burnt bit of coal. Okami looked fine, even in 480i and Lifeline is a little blurry.

Which DVD player would you recommend then?

Ok I just ordered some "cheapy" cables from play-asia (thought about getting the official sony cables but they were twice the price and I doubt the quality is any better...). I also orderd a component switchbox from play-asia so that I can switch between my PS2 and Xbox360 when it arrives! Yay!

I use the Oppo OPDV971H myself. www.oppodigital.com It's roughtly ?120, which is bargin for what it does.
You may prefer to stick with a cheapo one if you only watch 1 film a week or something, you get what you pay for when you get to this end of things though.

No, very few players do as it's not actually allowed by the DVD Forum.
There is at least one player that allows it via some hack, I couldn't tell you with though.
