Watched X Men First Class earlier. Was much better than the Wolverine film and my girlfriend reckons it's better than some of the original trilogy films although I can't remember them enough to comment. Either way, it was a good watch with decent special effects and whilst I found the guy playing the young Xavier slightly irritating at times it was nice to see some of the background to the characters.

Well, I watched Fight For Your Life. It was not quite how I expected it to be, the framework felt similar but everything else was all skewiff.
What I initially knew about this film is that it was a very vicious, controversially racist mid-70s revenge flick about a group of convicts who invade the home of a God-loving black family and subject them to various misdeeds before the tables get turned and the convicts become mincemeat, ultimate justice gets served, the best type of revenge movie. What I never reckoned for was that the trio of murderous/rapey convicts are actually multiracial - one white, one hispanic, one oriental - and the white dude who 'leads' them is the guy who plays J.F. Sebastian in Blade Runner(!)
It's a truly odd film. It came out in 1977, same year as Star Wars. It's one year younger than Taxi Driver, yet it feels much older, much more basic, *definitely* a b-movie, yet still has an edge to it.
Must've been a very hard film to make, especially as much of the dialogue is terribly racist, and a lot of the movie basically consists of the main white actor in the film shouting reams of horrible, racist slurs at a cast of five black actors. Must've been a very awkward shoot for all the cast (god knows what they chatted about between scenes!)
Anyway, not the best 'nasty', but still has its moments (which I'll spoiler tag), namely a
kid getting battered to death
with a
rock
,
the best "Bible-bashing" Bible attack
I've EVER seen (I've never actually seen this before, btw!!!), and a dog
*actually* pisses all over the head of one of the main actors
. I'm making it all sound essential. It is and also isn't. I wish Verhoeven had directed it.

I want to hunt down Carpenter, pack him up with a flame thrower and some grenades and then we go find the stupid mutha fukkers responsible for this piss poor attempt of a franchise start up and burn them alive! And whilst they're cooking, I'll say "Burn in Hell" in Norweigen too!
Also why do writers insist on having blobby, jelly or insect type aliens who are apparently able to contruct and fly ships and technology far far superior to our own

I saw an ad at the cinema for that new The Thing film & thought to myself: "oh dear".
What is the point of trying to make a film related to such a classic horror that it is obviously gonna be crap & fail? You cannot & will NEVER beat Carpenters classic.
I watched:
Knowing - Thought it was a great film, apart from near the end. I didnt expect it to include
aliens
. Special effects were amazing tho! Very graphic in places & looked genuinely real. Its the best disaster movie I've seen so far & I normally hate them.
X Men Origins Wolverine - Really liked it. The opening sequence that runs the actors credits is pretty powerful. Liev Schreiber looked like he's really worked out for the role. Would love to see a sequel.
This Is England 88 - Again I loved it. Very dark. Actually mostly dark, with a few funny moments, but its meant to be considering what happened in 86. It shows that not everyone has a happy hollywood xmas.
Only Yesterday - Got it on DVD already but had to watch it on tv as it tells such a lovely story of growing up in 60's Japan as a child thru to adulthood.
