A lonely place to die - Starring Melissa George, who used to be in home and away a fair few years back. First 30-40 minutes was great, the film starts by following a group of folk clambering around in the Scottish highlands looking for some cheap thrills. Upon stumbling across a child buried in a makeshift den, there then follows a game of cat and mouse resulting in a somewhat ridiculous finale.

If you like movies such as the descent or dog soldiers, more so the locations actually, then this will be worth your time - A solid 7/10

13 Assassins (2010) - Pleasant samurai flick that (for me) was largely ruined by only having 1% of Miike inserted into it. If it was just a plain retelling it would have been another okay Samurai flick or if Miike went balls to the wall it would have been nice. Just having his tip lightly graze the film made it jump the shark.

Stardust - Crap but it has charm. If it wasn't for the recent influences it could(n't in a thousand years) be a new 80's Legend of the Dark NeverEnding Labyrinth. Plenty of lovely ladies though.

Watched a few music Docs (New York Doll, The Devil and Daniel Johnston) as well but they aren't easy to recommend.

I saw Payback for the first time since the cinema in 1999! I was in the mood for a revenge thriller recently and saw this was on and recorded it.

I quite like it because it's actually a very straightforward story - Mel Gibson's character, Porter, has been double-crossed, left for dead and robbed of his share of a heist. He doesn't die, so he sets about getting his money back and won't stop until he does. A good mix of characters and Porter's no good guy, but still easy to cheer for him. Apparently the director's cut is very different, and I'd like to see how the whole thing is resolved, but I'm guessing it's bleaker.

The thing that struck me most is the opening track is very similar to David Shire's The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, and was quite surprised to see it wasn't him that wrote the score. A little Googling reveals that in early test screenings, they actually used the Pelham soundtrack. The jazz funk soundtrack continues throughout the film, but the opening credits have the most driving score.

The directors cut of Payback is pretty much a different film, to the point that I think it even has a separate listing on imdb.

Personally I love the theatrical version but lots of people seem to love the fact that the directors cut is dark and f'ed up. Gibsons character comes across as a lot more cold and angry in it and he's almost a psychopath. I liked the humour in the theatrical version and that's not in the directors cut either really as its a much more serious film about a guy who's really pissed off.

Deffinitley worth watching if you like the film though, becuase it's so different a take on the same story.

Watched Screamers the other night. Last watched this when it came out around 16 years ago! Few dodgy effects in there but it still holds up alright for a cheap movie and is helped along nicely by starring Robocop in there.

Popped the sequel on this evening...utter trash. I was hoping at least the special effects might be decent as it's only a few years old only it was filmed in that typical straight-to-DVD/TV format and it looked so crap.

I watched that tonight on Netflix and was also surprised how well its stood the test of time. It has a great atmosphere and is one of the few sci fi films that really nails the foreign planet loneliness. The real world sets look great considering its a low budget.

Also put Lifeforce on Netflix but I think its the butchered US version. Top cheese that makes for a great drinking game if you take a shot every time there is some terrible ham. And remember its Colonel Kane....of the SAS

Watched Lonesome Jim for the second time last night, starts Casey Afleck as a drop out writer who has to move back in with the parents where his failed, divorced elder brother also resides. Nice low key indie hit about depressed douchebags.

Followed that up with Argento/Bava's Demons, crowd in a movie theatre start turning into demons following the events of the movie they are watching. Gore fest with a few good effects and excellent 80s soundtrack. Short to boot @ 88 mins.

Demons is a real treat. Rewatched that one about a year ago. Although, on the rewatch, it did bring home the whole expansion of the term 'zombies' because, if it were made today it would be called Zombies. The Demons in the movie are very similar to the enemies in Rec, for example.

A zombie is a rotting corpse. Or it should be anyway.
