Been listening to a lot of 80's synth music lately, especially Trans-X

The debut Nero album was released today and I've been listening to it all day. If you know the singles like Me & You or Promises, you know mostly what to expect. It's sort of half pseudo-soundtrack and half pop songs. Big synth productions that at times almost sound like, with a quick instrumentation switch, they could be metal ballads. People seem to be calling Nero dubstep but I think that's a word that has sort of lost its meaning and wouldn't point you in the right direction in imagining what this is. I really like it - it's a strong album that seems very sure of what it is. But with one caveat: only within the main album itself. The bonus track version adds tracks that just seem to draw it out, losing the pop part of the equation and, instead, adding what feel like cheesy voice samples. There's some interesting stuff in the bonus tracks, especially the last symphony one, but album does feel like it should finish where it does in the regular version.

^I'll have to look into that. I really liked 'The Natural' but he 'fell off' quite badly with his second album, started going on a bit of a 'jiggy' route and seemingly vanished without trace not long after. Know he'd done some recent stuff but kind of assumed it might be weak, so never bothered. Yeah, will check out.
Btw, you heard that Buckwild/Celph album? I think it's pretty amazing, one of the best hip hop albums I've heard in a looong time (bar some very occasional issues on the rapping side).
Anyway, any excuse to post Masta IC with its wonderfully smoked-out beat:

^Nice one.
I actually really like Celph Titled, it's just his rapping persona is deliberately a bit fake and playful, he's more a punchline rapper (and a VERY good one) than somebody 'street'. I think a more street-type rapper, super-skilled, would've been maybe more appropriate for those instrumentals, maybe Big L if he was still alive.
But I can't really moan, I still think it's a fantastic LP.

Mixmag Lost Classics (free covermount from 2001) - picked it up at the wild bird hospital in my road - they have an alladin's cave there, with stuff donated and raising money for the hospital. I'll be going back without the kids next time and a whole load of cash.
Fantastic early trance and dance.

The new Malkmus album, Mirror Traffic. Was bound to enjoy it as I love the guy, but it's both instantly brilliant and peppered with 'growers' for the repeat listener.
My current favourite aside from 'Tigers'...
I'm a sucker for shifts into 6/8 time, and those guitars at the 4 minute mark? Fwooh yeah!
