Are you sure you have it setup properly? I mean we are talking about using CoreAVC here right? Certainly sounds like it and from what I've heard if you have a 2Ghz PC or above with reasonable specs then you shouldn't have much problem with most releases, unless people were talking about standard res when they said that. Anyway I'll check out how that ep runs on my laptop which isn't particularly good just to see if it might not be your settings. You'll be pleased to know that ep 2 of Bartender has been released at a standard res by lunar and I also know one other group is working on it but I don't know if they'll bother with dual releases.

Anyway started to watch some new shows(finally!). Saw Busou Renkin ep 1. Wasn't too bad but not particularly special either. It wasn't terribly exciting but then again I thought it started off better than Kiba at least and that show has improved a fair bit since then, so for the time being I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. It certainly seems like your average shounen show, seems to be missing that something which puts it on a par with the bleaches, narutos and one pieces of this world. I think D Grayman will be similar, going by what I read of the manga, I enjoyed it but there was nothing that really grabbed me. Actually the weapons alchemy thing has some potential, I just hope it doesn't go the pokemon way. We shall see...

Sumomomomo ep 1 - Not bad again. I didn't find it that funny but it did have me grinning for the most part. Certainly the first time I've seen an anime character spread her legs, which was... er... different. Since I'm finishing up some older shows now and I've got some slots free I suppose I'll be keeping up with this unless it goes downhill. I hear ep 4 is supposed to be really good. I did laugh out loud during one part though and that was when we see the whole of the childhood flashback i.e. the aftermath of him standing up to the bullies

Kanon ep 5 - Best episode so far for me. Even though the story still hasn't really got going. There's hints of stuff though that's for sure, and it might be interesting to go back once the series has finished to see how glaring these might have been. Very funny episode all in all. Agreed on his description except I'd replace Rin with pretty much any harem anime lead since they all have the same sort of pulling power, so Rin's is nothing special (IMO). Yuuichi really does seem like Kyon mkII(apparently it's the other way round since this version of Yuuichi is quite close to the game version who was also very sarcastic and has been around for a while, longer than Kyon at any rate). So many of his sarcastic comments this episode had me laughing

the bit where he's with the silent girl Mai and her friend asks him what they were doing and he says she was just confessing her love for him. The bit in the bathroom at the beginning, the porno mag bit, the bit where he catches her sneaking into his room, the embarassing oniichan moment, the bit where he tells ayu she must try some of that special jam etc...

. Certainly one of my favourite shows from the new stuff and perhaps the main one I'm keeping up with. I don't know if I would call it the most favourite current show, I think that still goes to either Saiunkoku , Nana, Bokura and/or Simoun(which I really need to finish off).

Code Geass ep 1 - Decent I thought for a first episode. I think I'll be sticking with it for now. Aside from Zegapain I haven't really been watching any mecha shows recently so this could fill that void. No annoying characters for me as of yet which is a plus (please let's not have another Shinn ) edit: on second thought I could see that main dude in the first ep become/is Shinn-like, he had a bit of arrogance about him in the first episode. Hope it doesn't go to his head or something.

Bakumatsu ep 1 - I thought the animation was fantastic and I thought it was a suitably mysterious and very good first episode. It's been getting some forum hype from a few places but has been relatively unpopular I think(I don't have download numbers). It's set in edo period japan or something, similar to the ayakashi ayashi setting basically.

The end of the episode also revealed a supernatural element to the show. The main dude seems like a bit of badass too.

One of the most impressive first episodes I've seen so far at any rate and a definite keeper in my book. The full name is Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto, quite a mouthful, and is being subbed by oyasumi as well as shinsen. Three subbed eps are out. Both groups are decent so take your pick. The video quality isn't fantastic but that's because the episodes are only available from a free internet stream at the moment, DVDs to follow at a later date no doubt. Not alot else to add except check it out. You could certainly do alot worse, judging by the stuff I've seen so far.

I need to catch up Bokura and Nana. It's been too long really should get through the eps I've got stockpiled.

Hey guys, decided I fancied getting back into anime and check out what's new. So far watched the first ep of Death Note and man what a series to start with! Bit worried that the main character reminds me of me when I was in school, prolly a good job I didn't see a note book fall from the sky while I was sitting in class.

I've also gone back to struggling through Hack.//SIGN, I've been trying to watch it since it first came out but I found it very slow to get going. There's something there though so I've always gone back. I'm up to episode 15 now. Can someone tell me if it ends at episode 26 and then what series comes next? I found an FAQ but it was full of spoilers, I don't want to ruin it for myself.

Gonna go back to plucking titles out of the latest posts in this thread, I'm up for anything at the moment so not asking for recommendations.

the entire hack series annoys me, although //roots isnt as bad imo

Hack end at ep ep26 inthe series, dvd only ep27/28 are for watching one you complete the Ps2 game which continue the story from ep26 onwards, which itself have 4 anime eps to cover the dealing the real world

let alone the books and manga cover side stories and //twlight cover the final story of Ver1 world be for .hack//root takes place.

Does the end of ep26 make you desperate to play the game? and is it US only? I thought there were more than one game actually.

Another one I've heard of is //luminality? Where does that fit?

            Comment

well it does and it doesn't being you won't see the //sign characters outside of names drops and a few cameo's, as nearly all the characters in //sign get there payoffs at the end(so quit) or are not in 'the world' by the time of the Ps2 game which is explained is mangas and novals as side stories so there all pretty much written out, only the effects of Aura's awakening are felt and Helba's meddling. Ps2 game have all new characters and deall with the after-effects of //sign.

//luminality are anime ep's that come with the Ps2 game to explain the real world goings on during the time of the games and then after all that, 3 more episodes conclude the story for //sign and Ps2 games. ep27 is a Mimiru backstory, ep28 is all the character from the games/anime meeting each other for the 1st time and then 'ep29' aka //GIFT is a parody special with fan service ending in the spring

then after few years inthe time line Legend of the Twilight(also know as just //twilight or //DUSK the latter being a translation error i think that just stuck) and is a pretty much self contained with plenty of comedy.

years after that ver1 of the world ends (due to fire destroying the game servers) and ver2 is made where the current set of anime/Ps2 game stories are set

Wiki's got a good .hack entry covering everything.

also the Ps2 game can be found on Pal format but part3 and 4 are rare and fetch around ?20 or ?40 each.

Thanks that explained everything nicely, I didn't want to look at any sites incase of spoilers but I might take a look at the wiki entry after I'm done with //SIGN.

SIGN by itself is pretty mediocre and boring IMO if taken standalone, but as a package I really enjoy the entire .hack series.

Assuming you've started with SIGN, you'll wanna be playing the 4 PS2 games next (watching the Luminality DVD that comes with each game after finishing each game).

There are lots of other bits after which you can really do in any order...
Legend of the Twilight manga/anime is fun (they are a bt different, the manga version is canon).
Both AI Buster mangas are great reads, nice side stories.
Another Birth is retelling the games from Black Rose's point of view, nnot read it yet myself.
There are a load of others too.

ROOTS and GU are the sequel, of sorts.

Finished //SIGN now, it ended pretty abruptly after dragging through the whole series slowly I'd like to try the games but I can't see that happening for a long time so I might try out one of the later series. No hurry though, there's plenty of new stuff I wanna try.

Oh man, episode 6 of Death note is out I want to see the manga but that'd spoil the show. I really like Ryuk, I was worried at first that he'd be just another advice giving comedy mentor/sidekick but he reasured me in episode 3

with his speech about how he's neither Light's friend or enemy.

I want him to do a bit more than just hang around, though I'm not sure what there is he could do.

Only just found out that the rest of Ebichu is available it's been a long time, I only got up to episode 14. Been watching some Marmalade Boy that I've had for aaages. Terrible quality and I feel too old to be watching it but I needed something to balance out the death.

Soukou no Strain ep1-2 - wow, don't let he 1st 15 minutes put you off thinking its just some kiddy mecha show.

Didn't think the producers would have gone as far as to wipe out all, what seemed like certain secondary characters to me, in the 1st episode. I was expecting some sort of attack to come and for them to be chased off the planet or something but I was like WTF that guys dead.. and then the girl and then her love interest... what the hell.. i was loving everything second of it and there was no Gundam Seed style piloting heroic's, Sara got total owned twice and then lost her controller thing that allows people in this universe to pilot the uber mech's.

As soon as i saw the pilot was a bloke i knew it was brother, so it sets up nice for revenge style thing(although it she it was at odds with what was more important, the death of her friends or return of her murdering brother). 2nd ep was more like Gunbuster 1 meets Stellvia which is always a good combo

Red Garden ep4 - more good stuff, liked it when rachel went nuts with the baseball bat, seemed pretty low tech ass whooping but no hint of that power she accidently unleashed last time they had to fight.

Story getting interesting but my only problem is why where they all together in the first place to end up dead, being none them where friends... hopefully it be answered along with the man dog things and why don't these black suits just shoot these dog men dead? Also no singing in this episode

Hecatetan ep1 - more shana dvd specials, even funnier than Yoshida bouncing her boobs around and staring and Yuji crotch. Loved the bit at the end with Hecate and Shana on Yuji head and Yoshida talking to herself about killing them both

Asatte no Houkou ep3-5 - Reallying enjoy this show even if the story very clich'e about girl becomes women, women becomes girl stuff. But the characters are likeable, specially Shoko in her now child body,

it was super cute then she got play with the kids inthe play ground and ending up all dirty when returning home. Can't wait for the next ep as Hiro gonna have some explaining to do after Toko 'broke' into their flat and there all on the way home together

Yoake mae yori ruriiro na ep3-4 - dear lord, what the heck as happened to the art and animation, its like im watching a completely different show, it that bad it reminded me of Mezzo DSA tv run. Still somehow, i'm draw to it in Musashi Gundoh way as the stories seems to be getting stupidier and stupidier, why the hell does a princess have a machine gun under her bed??

Asatte No Houkou - Just saw the first episode myself. And whilst I might agree that the story is a bit cliche, I think most people will have seen the twist at the end coming from a mile off. The way it's been handled, for the first episode at least, has been excellent. For example, she(Karada) does act quite mature and not like your typical moe loli from countless other shows. So yeah, story's been seen before but the characters are quite unique and well developed IMO, and this is just after one episode. Definitely one of the best first episodes of the new stuff that I've seen so far(not a lot mind you). Could be a nice replacement for H&C, as my slice-of-life romance/drama show, although I guess this has a fantasy element to it too. Hopefully it doesn't descend into fanservice heavy fluff, not that I mind that kind of stuff, but there's a few new shows that already have this covered. Definitely makes a nice change from some of the new shows I've seen which were more heavy on the action. Thought Shouko was a bit harsh on Karada mind you, especially given that Hiro had already told her how she hates being treated as a kid. Looking forward to the rest of it now. Add another one to the definitely following list.

Also some rumours that have surfaced again. Apparently Zero No Tsukaima and more importantly Haruhi will be getting second seasons around this time next year, so that'd be the Fall 2007 season. I don't think it's been properly confirmed yet but it's been put on a reputable anime site which has been right more times than it has been wrong. For the record I don't think they added a second series of haruhi to their schedule the first time the rumours surfaced. I guess for now I'll remain optimistic whilst waiting for a proper confirmation. Just thought some of you might like to know.
