Anti-shake lenses can give 3 to 4 extra stops - so you could get away with down to 1/15th of a second exposure handheld, though that would depend on the length of the lens ( the longer the lens the quicker the exposure needs to be and the slower you go the less of the shots will be sharp, even with anti-shake). These lenses come at a premium price though, and they won't help you capture moving subjects any better.
If you're getting shake there are some other things you can try, opening up the aperture to a wider setting ( lower number ) or upping the ISO to a higher figure. 100 -> 200 -> 400 -> 800 each is a "stop" extra, or use the flash.
It could just be you're using too low ISO, too small an aperture and no flash all at the same time which won't help at allIt could also be down to technique - holding the camera properly can help a lot. When you press the shutter, the mirror flips up, this can be enough to shake the camera if you're not steady; you could also be moving the camera as you're pushing the shutter, or your whole body could be moving - it doesn't take much. If I'm using a long exposure handheld, I'll lean against a wall, or lamp-post or some such thing so I'm not moving as much.
Took this one on the way to work this morning:

Another nub question, as the Canon 400D doesn't have anti-shake in the body and the kit lens doesn't have it built in, I'm interested to know how well anti-shake works? Tried to take some pics today at lunch and the shake was evident a little too much for my liking, I would rather buy a new lens than cart a tripod around with me. Any info (and first hand experience) much appreciated!
This is a 100% crop taking at 50mm (100mm effective), 1/8 for the non-IS shot 1/6 for the IS shot:

Thanks for the info John, I'm considering getting a telephoto lens, my garden is going to be a great place to watch the Southend Air Show from
Been getting to know my camera a little better today in preperation for my holiday in Thailand next week. I'm trying to avoid posting too many n00b pics but I value all you guys advice so heres another one. Bit of a clich? setup, but I thought the lightening was interesting.

cat rocks, great shot
not too active right now, over the last two weeks my eyesight has gone to pot, suffering from a healthy dose of double vision. I got new glasses that helped for a week but now they are pretty much useless now.
Waiting for referels and test results to find out what the hell is happening.
Keep up the good work guys; I still enjoy browsing this thread. I just stay away from the computer a bit these days.

Not done much over the last few days. Though just got hold of some lighting gels and decided to have a play (apologies for the poor quality of the model).
Flash gels available in a 30 pack (6 colours x5 - £6.25!) from FlashGels. Super service ordered and paid via paypal on Friday, got them this morning.

WOW at those shots Gareth, just perfect. Great shots from the rest of you too!
I've just returned from Vegas and am dumping the photos onto my PC - probably about 1200 in total. I'm a little worried I fluffed up a couple of key shots (I had a wedding to shoot too!) but there were some good photo ops. Walking about the Strip and through Casino's with an SLR and Tripod is a fun experience! So glad I bought the G9 for a compact!

Had a quick look though, some seem to have come out quite nicely but I'll take another look tomorrow (pub night!).
This was taken from the top of THE Hotel, in the MIX bar.
It's all one shot, no photoshopping.
