Loving those Red Arrows shots Malc, very good indeed!

As for how the Pigeon Detectives guy got all that air, he had just leaped off of one of the monitors at the front of the stage! He was quite entertaining and great fun to photograph - I had to speed up my shutter speed considerably (to 250th of a second) in order to catch him in focus!!

Nice shots Dan. It's awesome to see how far people have come since they started posting in here.

Malc, those are glorious, don't touch them at all.

Herb, that guy on the beach is really nice. For landscape stuff, having a sense of the scale of things is important. That shot of the trees you posted is nice, but 90% of the stuff is on the same horizontal plane. So you're not really showing us the landscape, you're showing us some trees.

Also very important is the light. Take photographs at dawn and dusk. There's a short period at either end of the day where the light becomes angled and golden, which gives the landscape a glow, and a shape to the light. You'll find that images taken during this period are generally much more interesting. If there's a lot of cloud cover, then look for interesting patches of light falling through. Also, people or other activity can often enhance a static landscape, though I suppose that's down to taste.

Technically, you usually want a maximum of detail from the image, so ideally you'd be at a low ISO, with a tight aperture, at the hyperfocal distance and on a tripod. Even if you don't bring one with you, you can often make do with a tree stump, a rock, a wall, etc, if only to steady the camera.

Lastly, look at lots of landscape photography!

Got the mag, it seems very informative. I'll be going down the local woods on the weekend to try some stuff out.

Cool, which one did you get in the end ?

Look forward to seeing some results

Dan - excellent work - that first one is really good.

Malc - very nice indeed. The 3rd and 4th are superb.

Nice GT. Specially like the second and last ones.

Here's another portrait similar to one I took a month or so ago:

It was actually a test for another shot, but I kinda prefer it. Wish I'd had a reflector or another light though, the dark side is a bit too dark.

Ta, those anti-vein druggie lights are quite good photographically.

I like the portrait, though as you said the dark seating area is a bit too dark.

Oh, is that why it's blue? Neat and creepy.

I actually meant the last one, I liked the blend of colours.

The dark area around the seats has a lot more detail when you see it larger, but I didn't want to clog up the page. Anyway, it was only a lighting test for another shot, but I ended up changing the composition. Bill Paterson (actor) and Sue Bowers (head of Heritage Lottery Fund):

GT - very good stuff, and well done for getting out that early.

Magnakai - Great portraits and very nicely lit.

Few from today - haven't used the camera for a week or so, so just quickly grabbed these when we popped out for a walk:

I have no desire to go on things like this again..

Pier (Blown the clouds in this one a bit..)

Cheers Dan - nice work there yourself.

Funnily enough, I was watching Doves on BBC Three coverage of T in the Park last night, and was saying how cool his guitar was (we're thinking of getting my eldest lad his first electric guitar as he is doing well with his acoustic).

Like the B&W Twang shot as well.

What is cool is that you've caught a great reflection of what looks like the crowd in the SFA shot.

It's funny how a lot of these bands seem to have vanished from the 'hit parade' but they seem to be doing well on the festival circuit.

I really like the second photo Dan, like Garf said, you can see the sun, blue skies and crowd in the guys glasses reflection, you can sort of get an atmosphere off that of a music festival. Reminds me a bit of the portrait of that guy who's an author and in his glasses you can see books.

I also really like your black and white photos. As always you use the available light perfectly and the deep blacks in those photos is brilliant.
