Use the priority modes. For example if you look at a shot and want a shallow depth of field use the aperture priority to set your aperture and leave the rest up to the camera. Likewise for shutter speed - if you want a specific shutter speed (faster for sports shots say, or slower to catch that milky water effect) then use shutter priority mode.

I only ever drop into manual mode when the camera is not giving me the specific effect I want in a priority mode. And thats pretty rare to be honest. I also use program mode a fair bit where the camera does just about everything.

      babs,

Congrats on the new kit. The various modes have been expertly explained by the other guys, so get snapping at once!

I will mention though that you should think of ISO, shutter and aperture as a magic triangle as each one affects the other in some way. If you understand that principle, then you are well on your way to good photos.

And do yourself a favour and get a decent memory card. I use a Sandisk Extreme III 1GB CF. I also format it in camera after every shoot as it has been suggested that this is the best way to keep the file structure in tip top condition. Overkill perhaps, but buy cheap, buy twice. There would be nothing worse than losing precious pics to a cheap card.

You have to laugh at memory prices today. 11 GBP for 2GBs!! I remember, back in the day, when my Amiga had 512K and upgrading to 1MB was merely an impossible dream due to the high cost.

Hee hee. Thats great! Though I hope all those bugs aren't in your garden!

Some photography news of my own.... my sister is opening a florists and she's asked if I will have some canvases printed to hang on her walls.... for sale!

Cool - I've looked at those, they're not cheap to have done mind.

All those bugs are in my garden atm, my plants seem infested with aphids and there are no ladybirds to eat them. Dunno what to do about it really, as I don't want to go spraying chemicals everywhere.

Changed lenses, though my 200-400mm is little soft for my liking:

As long as you're not growing lettuces!

I've had a couple of canvases done as presents for people. They look fantastic if you get the right shot.

Those birds do look a little on the soft side.

Yeah, it's the lens rather than my focusing - a smaller apature helps, but then you get slower exposures of course. Mind, I only paid £150 for it, so I wasn't expecting anything earth breaking.

A couple of our biological cousins.

Actually they look like a couple of my cousins, no wait they've probably got a job!

                      Nice pics anyway.

                        Where's the monolith?

They're superbly pin sharp by the way. Where did you take them?

Went to a May Day thing today. Lots of fat men in leather.

I drank a fair amount of beer and took a lot of photos. I got one excellent candid portrait of my friend with his young son (11 months) which I think really captures there relationship but unfortunately I can't share as they don't like piccies of him going onlne. Shame as he's cute as hell but obviously I respect there wishes in this regard.

Other pics (of fat men in leather) will be going up shortly

Ok, these aren't really anything to go by, as I was testing the new SD card I bought today (so far, so good) and only had five minutes, but I wanted to see how the colours came out and how well the macro mode fared on the stock 18-55 lens that came with it. Please note I've not had a chance to crop or adjust any of the images at all, these are as they came out of the camera.

I'm not overly happy with any of them, they are after all just snaps, but it's nice to get a feel for the level of colour and knowing just how close I can get with the lens for now.

I do have a photo of a horse from the woods today, but when I got back I realised its wang is hanging out

                              Call it a candid...

A "cinematic" one from me. Bigger you can view it better it looks tbh.
