This lot was waiting for me when I got back from Paris yesterday:



The two columns on the left are a selection of 15 70s/80s/Motown vinyls(eBay). Third column is a pack of ten random funky house things(eBay). DP's Homework on the top-right(eBay), bottom-right is Discovery which I bought brand new at Gibert Joseph in Paris on Friday for the princely sum of 21 Euros. Also among that lot is Michael Jackson's Thriller 25th anniversary album which I found for 5 euros at a lovely little shop called Crocodisc.

Can't wait for tonight when I'll get to spin this beautiful, beautiful collection. No idea what I'll play first!

I played the Thriller album. I'm not having much luck with this foray into vinyl, though.

I bought a mini record player for ?30 off eBay which is pretty awful(line out isn't actually line out as it's affected by the volume control and, even worse, the built-in speakers stay on! Have to use the headphone socket out to my hifi to cut the speakers off). My Phil Collins hifi doesn't add enough bass so it sounds like tinny speakers. I ran the output to the Macbook and used an equaliser but it added too much lag(not a problem in itself but when you can hear the sound from the needle a half-second before the speakers, it's annoying) and I don't want to have to do that every bloody time.

So I bought a rather decent, old-style Panasonic ghetto blaster for ?20(with detachable speakers) as it has a proper manual EQ but, again, not enough bass(although much better than before). Worse still, what I thought was line-in from the photo is actually line out so I have to use the mic in which bypasses the super bass knob.

Wondering whether it'd be possible to hack a line-in somehow, maybe piggy-backing the tape or CD but I've no idea how I'd go about doing that. The other option would be a preamp for the record player.

Alternatively I could cut further losses by just selling these hifis and record player and buying a hifi with one already built-in...

Italian guy: I'll be going back to Italy.
Me: I'll be at home watching Ghostbusters like I do every year.
Italian guy: Ghostbusters! *sings the song*
Girl: Ghostbusters!? Seriously?
Me: Oh yeah, it's a British tradition going back 25 years. Ghostbusters at Christmas and Groundhog Day at Easter.
Girl: I loooove Ghostbusters! I used to watch the cartoon when I was little! You know the cartoon?
Me: YEAHH! The cartoon was wicked!
Italian Guy: I used to watch it in Italy AND I had the figures!
Me: Me too! I had the Egon with the pokey-out eyes and the hair! And you twiddle the gun thing and the stream spins around!
Italian Guy: Yeahhh!
Me: (sombre expression) Man, I remember when my parents told me the Ghostbusters weren't real. I was devastated! I didn't talk to my mum for three days. THREE DAYS! Not a word! My whole life fell apart. I was only nine! All that time it was my dad giving me presents and not the Ghostbusters
Girl gets up from chair crying with laughter, unable to eat. Calms down, resumes lunch.
Me: I can't believe all three of us love Ghostbusters. This is so cool. I wonder who else loves Ghostbusters? Maybe the whole hotel! We've gotta find out.
Indian guy from Accounts strolls in...
Me: Hey! You like Ghostbusters, don't you?
Indian guy: Ghostbusters? What's that?

Won a Cambridge Audio Azur 340A for ?43. Frequently sell for ?100ish and retail at ?180. Not really available now but it means more budget for speakers.

Collection only usually leads to a bargain, my Dad had me collect a Sony RCD-W100 the other month which he got for about half the going rate!

Definitely. If I had a car I'd probably have bought all the PVM that sell in London for a couple of quid due to being pick up only from the last few years.

I joined Zipcar(?30) and picked up a decent condition used Ikea sofabed for less than the price of a new one(?95) with delivery(?40).

I found out on Friday that one of my uncles is living out his last days now so went to see him yesterday and today. My aunt told me he's perked up loads since I showed up which was really nice to hear. He's started smoking again as his doctor's told him to just enjoy himself now so I joined in:
