Well, something of a CoD3 love-in in this very thread made me decide to buy it. Originally it didn't feature in my November list of essential purchases, but the glowing reports here twisted my arm, and I went for it.

And I have to say, though I seem largely alone, I think it's an intensely disapointing game. Firstly, the good points - some of the environments, and environmental effects are very good. The sound is well done too. However the character models are awful, still the same old angle poised muppets, with lip syncing from a Brazillian B-movie. It also seems to have increased Call of Duty 2's propensity to insert you in a big firefight, but not really make you feel like you're taking part, or important in any way. Probably like being a real soldier, granted, but this is a videogame. The aiming is tedious, and wayward, still feeling spongy and imprecise. There is little viceral thrill in the kill, as bullets seem to hit the enemy with all the impact of stroking a shed door with a peanut butter sandwich.

There's more: The vocal samples at times repeat maddeningly, and it's easy to become impaled on the environments. It also just isn't... well... interesting enough. After an hour of screaming people, booming bombs, tanks exploding, bullets whizzing, you just sort of think... meh. The pacing obviously has to be kept fast to stop you whipping off the gaudy facade and finding the deeply average, linear, FPS underneath. Slap enough makeup on a pig, and someone will kiss it.

Someone else also mentioned that CoD2 seemed to span more environments, and was fundamentally better thought out, and I'd have to agree. This is a tarted up CoD2 for sure, but in the tarting a little bit of the brain and soul got left out.

These are single player impressions, I will spend some time with the multiplayer - which could be the title's saving grace. At the moment, CoD3 has been shelved until I can raise some enthusiasm.

Yeah amazing work, I just have 3 normal ones left, and all the multiplayer but I cant get into ranked games.

You say you cant use grenades or melee for the achievements? I definitely used alot of grenades, and others have said they've definitely used melee... Hmmm!!

Doesnt it say that melee attacks dont count in the achievement?

Also, anyone else getting some glitch online where some of the teammates dont have the gold icon ontop? Has led to a few accidental teamkills from me

Yeah I swear thats happened to me before, thats why sometimes I just start randomly shooting my teammates in the face and they are left lying on the floor like:

The achievement isnt worded well, It says "Melee attacks don't count" Which I took as not being allowed, but some people take it as they dont matter if you use them or not. It should have said "You can/can't use melee attacks"

Veteran mode is so cunty, much worse than CoD2. Shooting through the ground seems to be the order of the day here, and the end of The Island is a nightmare. I can get the last ****er on the gun, but then some ****head shoots me from behind. Soo cheaty.

              edit: Done it now, phew!

Don't think I can do the rest, that was pain. Much tougher than CoD2 ever was.

I finally pulled myself away from Gears and played this tonight. The graphics look great, it plays well and feels familiar, but the guns sound a bit weak.

I wish you could control the volume of the music and/or have the option to turn it off.

Straight in on veteran this time too.

Ok first off MP is really cool......lots of fun, like the vehicles and all that. like the classes. lots of fun. But much better than Cod2 MP....nah not really.

Now the SP....I'm really starting to think this game is a load of ****ing ****. So godamn frustrating even on Normal difficulty. The check points are distanced very oddly. I finished most of COD2 on Veteran and love every second of it. This game seems so buggy and really cheap when it comes to forcing the player in a given direction. The invisible walls are SO apparent. COD2 is of course totally linear but it wasnt so in ur face like this game. The game doesn't look that much better and runs prob even worse than COD2. I just feel like its similar...but not as good in anyway to the pervious game.

                  meh.

I feel like i should continue and get my moneys worth but my gut instict is telling me that this is a ****ing dog worthy of the bin. And i got REALLY ****ING good games to play....like Okami and FFXII but they're not TEH NEXT GEN and look a little fugly on my HDTV.

Come on Gears! blow me away!

You listening to it in surround sound? If so then thats why the weapons sound weak, its only 4.1. Theres no centre channel for the game, so you have to fiddle about with your amp setting to force it.

How do you force it? Its got broken 5.1, thats for sure.

Well you should have many different setting in your amp, like proper Dolby Digital, Pro Logic, etc. The DD one doesnt work so just choose any other one that sounds right for you. The one I use on my Denon amp is called 5 Channel Stereo, it brings out all the proper sounds and the guns sound meaty and nice and theres still a good variation between front and rears so your hardly losing any of the surround sound aspect. But whatever you have could be completely different so just muck about until you find something that works.

Alot of games do this btw, CoD2 was the same.

Now you mention it, it was the same in CoD2 too. Interesting..

                          I'll have a play.

Had some awesome multiplayer games online last night. Definately the online game of the year for me. Just so much fun.

I hope the thread hasn't mislead you - the general opinion is the same as yours for single player. It's a little bit **** at the end of the day. Multiplayer however, is entirely different.

The game desperately needs a patch, but online is still a riot with the right people. Great games last night, loved the match on that large flat village, got pretty intense towards the end and the battle moved about all over the place.

I don't think the Single Player is THAT bad really - Very frustrating at times and some of the checkpoint placements are **** and the difficulty is all over the place but it's by no means a bad game.

But the multiplayer is on another level - They patch that up to iron out the few problems and it's online title of the year I reckon. And that's saying something because I adore what Ubi did with SCDA's online game and have no doubt from reports that GOW is setting the standard for net code.
