    Yet, amazingly, I do

I've been nailing all those barrel rolls and still crawling home about 30 seconds behind the gold.

Weird. I can't think of anything else you might be missing. If you haven't figured it out this evening, I'll have a look at how I take it and let you know what I'm doing.

I'm late to the party, but I downloaded this last night and it looks mind blowingly beautiful!

I only had a go on the first two unlocked time trial stages. So i'm looking forward to playing through the career type mode today. I'm truly loving how slick everything is, including the menu.

Beware the corrupt save bug in this game! Totally frustrated last night, I turned the game on only to see it asking me if I agree to the EULA and epilepsy nonsense.

Everything gone, all golds, loyalty. Totally took the wind out of my airbrakes.

May be a stupid question, but are you certain you're playing on the correct profile? I've had a couple of occasions where I've loaded a game and panicked that all my progress has been lost, only to realise I'm logged into my US account rather than my main UK one.

The Rapier class Time Trial on Chengou Project in the 3rd set of Campaign did require a fair few goes last nigt but I did manage to get gold after about 30 minutes or so (using Feisar). However, being 30 seconds off the pace seems an awful lot. The only really troublesome sections is the hairpin at the start and the chicane at the end. How are you at those sections Darwock? That's where I imagine most time can be lost.

What camera does everyone use? I was using the default outside one but I just find it much easier with the uhh 'no ship cam' whatever its called. you know, the one you always use in driving games if you're not special.

It never occurred to me to do any barrel rolls on that track. I think you should just pick a different ship and choose another place to do your boost For that track I used Assegi, and rather than barrel roll after the last bend before the tunnel, get the ship's nose down fast, hit the double speed on the right, use boost, hit the speed on the left and then try and then hit all the speeds in the tunnel. Getting the very last speed pad of the track is quite important cos after that bend you're going quite slowly, and you have to take the corner 'wrong' or use a sideways shift (altho i don't like using those).

Long story short, I think people overstate the importance of barrel rolls

Why the dig at the end of your post?

Anyway, I use the default outside view. I think it just lets you see more of the track, see the direction and line you're pointing in better (the critical thing about wipeout!) and it also helps with seeing more of the competitors around you.

I may have confused my failures, I think it was actually Senboko Climb that I was so far behind on - and I have just figured it out. It may not be the correct solution but if I boost on the exit of the tunnel I can jump aaaaaaaalllllll the way over the wobbly section before the final straight, took about 7 or 8 seconds off my lap! which is about 30 seconds over the whole TT. I don't have gold on it yet though.

As for Chenlong, I cleared that just now by using a different ship and (probably) getting lucky. I'm not sold on the double barrel roll section - if I land 2 rolls I usually end up in the scenery at the turn - if I hit the boost pad as well it's a write off.

Interesting to read about putting the ships nose down - I hadn't even considered altering the ships pitch until now.

I've read a few people who swear by boosting at that point, but I always thought the trade-off from being in the air too long and a hard landing wasn't worth it. Altho that end bit has the appearance of being 'wobbly', you can drive a straight line right through the middle By using the boost there, you're also missing a speed pad in the middle of it...

Yeah but I was driving it the regular way previously and even if I pulled it off smoothly I was still around 10 seconds slower..?? I don't understand my own laps.

The positive feedback from you guys encouraged me to get this. I was a massive fan of 2097 and the original back in the day, but I didn't really take to Pure so I approached this with caution. I did recently buy WipEout 3 Special Edition too, so my love for WipEout has not waned. Not sure what I didn't like about Pure, there was nothing fundimentally wrong with it. The small form factor maybe? Who knows.

Whatever the case, I'm liking this! Sorry to bring the whole resolution/fps lark into this, but this is a game that really does benefit from 60fps. Ridge Racer 6/7 is another one. It just adds wonders to the entire feel of the thing, and it boggles the mind that they originally targetted 1080p/30 rather than 720/60. I've not gotten too far into this, just gave it a whirl to see if it's the WipEout I love, and it sure is. I can kinda see what Dogg Thang was getting at in earlier posts about their being too much detail, it does sometimes seem overkill at the expense of the more 'sterile, clean' look which probably suits WipEout better, but it's no negative. Zone mode is incredible btw, even in it's toned down form.

The whole WipEout Vs. F-Zero debate somewhat annoys me tbh, I had this debate with a friend the other day. The pattern seems to be that people who start with F-Zero are baffled by the fact that it handles very differently, it's initially not as fast as F-Zero, and it gets written off as F-Zero with weapons. I feel this is failing to appriciate how WipEout is taking a very different approach to the genre (I love both series' btw). There's an emphasis on silky smooth speed from the get-go in F-Zero, and that's what makes the game so special, and why I'm dying for a Wii version to come out asap. Handling is very different, simpler maybe but it suits what they're trying to achieve with F-Zero, and there's a definate learning curve.
Conversely, I'd argue WipEout is slower initially, with with a greater emphasis on teaching the player to take better control of their craft, master the game's unique apprach to drifting and making it work to your advantage, learning the courses, taking advantage to the jumps in combination with the crafts abilities, sensible use of your arsenal... in other words, a very different approach to the genre, and I feel that aside from the fact that they're both futuristic racers, the similarity doesn't go too much further.

Complaints about the drifting... no offense to anyone, but it reminds me of my friend's inability to play Ridge Racer 7. He's used to games like Forza and Gran Turismo where he's able to really take control of his drift, and it completely throws him when trying to play Ridge Racer 7, because he tries to approach drifting like in Forza and it just doesn't work. He then hates the game because he can't drift properly, without appriciating that Ridge Racer 7's drifting is supposed to be different. It does essentially drift for you, because the emphasis there is not on realistic drifting, but use of the slipstream to increase your drift, undertaking through drive, managing your nitrus, in other words, other aspects that make the game unique. Same goes for Outrun 2/2006, so yeah... if your trying to drift F-Zero-style in WipEout, then "your doing it wrong!" as they say.

This game is a godsend for me really, because there's no chance I'm going to have the time to play through stuff like Fallout 3, Fable 2, Tomb Raider Underworld and the like, so a game like this which I can dip in and out of... the rest of my years gaming for £11.99, top stuff!
