This presentation did a good job of ****ting on the regular PS5. Now I’m even further away from thinking about one of those.

The market pool is smaller (and of course Sony know this), but if you think it's too expensive, you're not the target market.

It will sell fine but I don't think the actual presentation itself was very good. Cerny talking about the big 3 is fine but trying to discern graphical improvements from a youtube presentation is never going to be worthwhile.
The conversion rate to pricing in other territories is pretty horrendous as well. Ouch!

At least, I've never had any complaints on the feedback forms I give them afterwards.

Since you're new to PS5, something to know about this gen is that it's very common for games to offer 'Quality' and 'Performance' modes you can choose between. Quality is usually roughly 4K resolution and 30fps. Performance is roughly 1440p resolution and 60fps..
I went to have a quick look at PS4 Pro reviews for context and it seems like the big difference there was the jump to 4K televisions so there was at least a clear generation leap of some sort (albeit probably not needed for most people). I have to say I'm happy with the PS5 performance so far as a new user. The price of the Pro has certainly removed any feeling that I bought at the wrong time - I never would have paid it. And I'd only feel like I'm missing out if there are exclusives.
In terms of Quality and Performance modes, is the default there set by the system or individually game by game?

I like having a disc-based system under the living room tv as I use it for films. A digital system + optional disc drive isn't attractive ... harks back to the 360 and the HD dvd drive
I'll probably get on board eventually (GTA 6 60fps might be a factor in that, unless Microsoft can offer the same for less) but I can't see me going nuts for a launch model.

It's been fascinating to see the general response to this.
I've not done a voxpop on the streets, but here, Facebook, Threads and YouTube are generally "That sounds lovely, but not at that price".
It's interesting to see Sony stumble a little bit as it feels like it's been a while, other than the relentless studio closures, which it feels we're becoming immune to the shock of.

Most of the online comments on the system from those still open to it seem to be relying on it being a 60fps machine for GTA6
GTA6 isn't going to be 60fps
Hell, if one company explictly has a title ill suited this gen to being 60fps whilst also actively having a strong business case to purposely not offer a 60fps mode - it's Rockstar

They often ask you when you start the game which you want or you just go into the settings to find the option.

They'll be hoping that these people don't bother with the optical drive and fill their 2TB NVME drive with full price day-one digital releases and profit. And I suspect that's exactly what's going to happen, so if they only sell a few million of them (maybe 7-10% of the existing userbase), that'll be some nice margin over the lifetime of the console.
This is only going to be for a small subsection of PlayStation owners plus im guessing the hardware is being sold at a profit, rather than a subsidised loss like is traditional, so its going to be expensive.
